June 3rd was a historic day in the Michigan House of Representatives, where under the leadership of Speaker of the House Matt Hall, the members passed House Bill 5739 and House Bill 5740 by a unanimous vote count of 106-0! These bills are the biggest strides Michigan has taken to combat the financial exploitation and abuse of vulnerable citizens in decades. The Michigan Guardianship Association and its members want to thank Representative Jay DeBoyer and Representative Kathy Schmaltz for championing this legislation and working with our organization on crafting common sense reforms that will not only protect an individual’s financial assets but help preserve their dignity. All 106 House members who were present deserve our thanks and gratitude for helping the Michigan Guardianship Association move one step closer to achieving one of our 2025-2026 Legislative priorities. Now let’s keep the momentum going and get to work on keeping bad actors out of the system by passing a state licensing requirement for professional guardians and conservators!

In Memoriam: Georgia Gaskins Callis
December 29th, 1966 - April 8th, 2026

The Michigan Guardianship Association is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Georgia Gaskins Callis, former MGA President, respected guardian, and dedicated leader whose service and advocacy strengthened Michigan's guardianship system for more than three decades.

Georgia was known for her unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable adults, her steady leadership during times of change, and her willingness to mentor and support professionals across the state. She played a pivotal role in elevating standards of practice, promoting ethical guardianship, and advancing legislative efforts that improved the lives of those we serve.

Her legacy is one of compassion, integrity, and tireless dedication. Georgia's influence will continue to guide our work and inspire the guardianship community for years to come. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by her life and leadership. She will be deeply missed.

Good Morning MGA! The dust has finally settled after our annual Spring Conference and what a turnout!
