Kiwanis Club of Coldwater

Kiwanis Club of Coldwater We are volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan.

In the early years, members focused on business networking. In 1916, Kiwanis became an international organization with the creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario. In 1919, the organization changed its focus to service. By 1962, worldwide expansion was approved. In 1987, women officially were allowed into the membership.

In case you were wondering why the flags were taken down on the south side of Chicago Street and on South Monroe and on South Hanchett Street it is so they won't interfere with the vendor booths for Strawberry Fest. They will be put back up Sunday morning. We also wanted to let everyone know we are leaving the flags in the Coldwater neighborhoods up until after July 4th rather than taking them down now and putting them back out in less than two weeks. Leave us a message if you are interested in getting a flag for your home or business. It is not too late to get one before July 4th.

Bella Vista Golf Course is looking very patriotic. Thank you to Wayne Case for spearheading this project. They have ordered sixty flags so far for the entrance and the homes around the golf course. 🚔 Thank you to Officer Nooh Aljabaly for being our guest speaker this week.

Though he is moving back to road patrol duties, he loved his position as a resource officer this past year and how he was able to connect with the students.

Thank you, Officer Aljabaly, for your commitment to the kids at Coldwater schools and to our community.

The Kiwanis Little Free Libraries at Parkhurst Park, Waterworks Park, Heritage Park, the playground at Coldwater Township Hall and The Children's Museum of Branch County have all been restocked. “Every child is one caring adult away from a success story. “

Thank you to Branch County’s CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) coordinator Ashley Ford and CASA advocate Kathy Foley for being our guest speakers last week.

They told us all about how CASA advocates work to provide stability to kids who are victims of abuse and neglect. These advocates are volunteers who build a relationship with and are a stable adult in the child’s life - working with teachers, doctors, talking to their case workers, and being the “eyes and ears” of the court.

The work is rewarding, and many times, a CASA volunteer is the only consistent adult for these children during a traumatic and difficult time in their life. Having a CASA advocate helps a child build resilience, ensures they receive services they need, and gives them better educational support.

CASA doesn’t have enough volunteers - there are currently over 100 kids in the system that don’t have an advocate.

Last week our guest speaker was Kathie Bappert from the Coldwater Community Center at the Beech House.

In recent years, there have been $175,000 in improvements to the building and grounds. As with many old buildings, the modifications from the past, not appropriately handled, require repairs now. They are awaiting a structural engineering support report to assess the next steps.

Plans for activities for 2026 include assistance with job applications and scholarships; sewing classes; English practice club; men’s dominos night; book club, Mother’s Day tea; pre-prom dinner, the Cultural Jubilee, and much more.

If you’re looking for another volunteer opportunity (everything from cleaning out the gardens to organizing events, etc. ), please get in touch with her.

We appreciated her time giving us this update, and we are placing a book in one of the area elementary schools in honor of her and the Beech House!
