The eastern screech owl
Back to the wild.

He had plenty to say about us testing his wings. We just wanted to make sure the little guy was ready to go.

Interesting fact: eastern screech owls can change the shape of their feathers to blend in almost perfectly with tree bark, making them incredibly hard to spot in the wild. πŸ¦‰

Wiggly Wednesday at MWR πŸͺ±πŸ¦—

Our adult Mississippi kites LOVE bugs this time of year. ❀️

We know things are expensive right now, but any little bit helps us keep these birds fed and cared for. If you’d like to support us, our wish list and donation links are in the comments below.

05/17/2026

Another baby of the year β€” a young Red-shouldered Hawk. This makes the 4th one we’ve gotten in so far that either left the nest too early or may have had something happen to the parents.

Red-shouldered hawks spend weeks learning from mom and dad after leaving the nest. Even when they can flutter and perch, they still depend on their parents to bring food and teach them how to survive. Sometimes storms, tree work, or other dangers interrupt that process.

We’ll do everything we can to try for a reunion first, and if that’s not possible, we’ll help this little one learn the hunting skills needed for a second chance back in the wild. πŸ¦…

Last weekend, the ARK pavilion transformed into a magical celebration of Spring in our first ever Tea & Toadstools!

Attendees donned their fairy best or came as they were to enjoy delicious teas and a variety of sweet or savory bites. After that, our nature crafts started, and though time got away and we didn't get to do all the crafts we planned, everyone made at least two beautiful creations to take home!

We couldn't have done this event without our volunteers, partners, and sponsors.

Our sincerest gratitude to the following businesses and individuals :

● Kelly with Tea & Tisanes (aka Mississippi Queen Catering) for the delicious fruit tea, coconut cupcakes, caramel almond brownie bites, vanilla cupcakes and help running the buffet. We were THRILLED to partner with her!

● Trader Joe's for the meat, cheese and crackers

● Homestead Nursery for the floral support of several beautiful live hanging baskets and more

● Additional food items donated by volunteers Ashley, Nat, Ally, and Holly

● Craft supplies from artist Nat Rodgers, Ashley Orton, and Nancy Orton

● Volunteers who invested their time to make this event happen were Natalie Rodgers, Ashley Orton, Carrie Moyers, Brett Hogan, Kate Friedman, Lisa Scruggs, Holly McDaniel, Allison Downen, Emma Conn, Melissa Gilbert, TJ Estrada, Katie Richardson, Jeffrey Collins

Thank you to all who made this magical event possible!

Wiggly Wednesday: HELP! We Need Bugs!

Right now, our baby bird nursery is bursting at the seams β€” we’re caring for over 60 hungry mouths that need to be fed every 15–30 minutes from sunrise to sundown. That’s a LOT of bugs!

So we are bringing back our special Wiggly Wednesday campaign to raise funds for feeder insects β€” the essential nutrition our baby birds need to grow strong and healthy so they can return to the wild where they belong.

Every dollar goes directly toward purchasing mealworms, crickets, and other feeder insects that are crucial for these growing chicks.

Your donation = More bugs = Stronger birds = More wildlife back in the skies!
These pics represent just a few of the hungry mouths we need to feed β€” and they’re counting on you!

Thank you for helping us keep these little beaks full.

The newest baby of the year πŸͺΆ
A red-shouldered hawk who took an early fall from the nest. We weren’t able to reunite him with his parents, but he’s safe here with us and learning what it means to be wild again.

And even at this age… instinct is strong. Turns out you’re just born knowing to be wary of a great horned owl πŸ‘€
