Scam Alert: Medicare Is Not Calling to Update Your File

If you receive a phone call claiming your Medicare file needs to be updated, hang up. Medicare is not contacting beneficiaries to "update" their files, and requests for personal information over the phone are often signs of a scam.

Protect yourself by never sharing your Medicare number, Social Security number, or banking information with an unsolicited caller. If you suspect Medicare fraud, report it.

Yes, even hospice has fraud. Folks on Medicare are targets for hospice fraud. Be sure to share this information with those you know to warn them about this scam. If you suspect hospice fraud, contact the SMP.

When Medicare beneficiaries are unable to act on their own behalf to address suspected Medicare fraud, errors, or abuse, the SMPs work with them, their family, caregivers, and others to address the problems. If necessary, SMPs refer cases to the proper authorities for further investigation.
