Into the Wild Week at Boys & Girls Club! 🐻🐾🐍🦋
This week, our adventurers explored the great outdoors through creativity and science! From paper chain snakes and butterfly life cycles to blubber experiments and polar bear paw prints, we brought the wild to life with every activity.
Rain sticks and journey sticks helped us hear and tell our wild stories. What a fun adventure we had this week!

Last week, we explored the science and creativity of sound! Our members created guitars, constructed paper cup telephones, experimented with water xylophones and sound amplifiers, painted in response to music, made their own sound songs, built straw flutes, and engaged in many more hands-on activities that deepened their understanding of how sound works.

A huge thank you to Central Emergency Services for an unforgettable visit to our Kasilof Clubhouse! Firefighters Engineer Joe Kruse, Volunteer Captain Mike Oden, and Volunteer Firefighter Finnley Loop gave our kids an up-close look at the fire truck, showed off their life-saving gear and tools, handed out awesome goody bags, and even let the kids spray the fire hose and climb inside the truck!🚒

We’re so grateful for their time, kindness, and the incredible work they do to keep our community safe.

High quality summer programs can improve academics, boost attendance, and raise graduation rates. Summers without quality learning opportunities put Alaska’s youth at risk for losing ground in academics in core subjects like math and reading. Students can lose up to two months’ worth of learning from the previous school year when their minds aren’t engaged during the summer vacation. The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) works to ensure all of America’s students, regardless of background, income, or zip code, can access and benefit from a high-quality summer learning experience every year.

Last week was Shark Week! 🦈 We investigated the way sharks breathe beneath the water, made shark teeth out of playdough, built sharks from Legos, studied the oily liver of sharks through an experiment, delved into watercolor techniques and applied those techniques to produce underwater scenes inspired by Eric Carle, and more.

Last week was filled with Stars and Stripes themed fun! We made fork-painted fireworks art, handprint eagles, constructed a Redcoat fort with Legos, created play dough monuments, conducted a sparkler STEM experiment using baking soda and vinegar, produced fireworks in a cup, designed our own wind sockets, tissue paper "stained glass" star art, straw rockets, and more!

Big thank you to Mrs. Janik, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Parrish from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Kenai Flotilla for coming out to our Kasilof Clubhouse and doing a presentation about the importance of wearing life jackets and for teaching us about water safety today!

Last week, we commemorated National Boys & Girls Club Week with a fun dress-up week and carnival-themed celebration! During the dress-up week, we had Marvel Monday, Twin Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Tired Thursday (pj day), and Festive Wear Friday (B&GC shirt day). In our art and STEM activities, we created a ring toss game, our own catapults, DIY photo booth props, cotton candy 3D art, cup and popsicle stick minute-to-win-it challenges, clown face art, and much more.
