A day has passed since our meeting with the Select Board. Thank you to everyone who joined us in person or online to discuss the proposed cell phone tower. Community engagement is essential, and every voice matters.
The Open Space and Recreation Committee is a town board charged with advising the Town on the preservation, management, and expansion of Cohasset’s natural resources and public parks. It’s a town mandate we take seriously.
We are an active board with several goals focused on caring for Cohasset’s natural environment.
This past year, at the Town’s direction, we completed an extensive 10-year Open Space and Recreation Plan. This plan is required by law. We developed it in partnership with the town's paid environmental planners, Beals and Thomas. Its completion makes Cohasset eligible for critical state funding. The plan also guides our long-term stewardship.
Each year, we organize the Earth Day Clean Up, which brings our community together. So far, we have removed more than 13,000 pieces of single-use trash from Cohasset.
We also work with the Town to secure funding for planting trees, helping to grow our urban forest.
We supported the passage of a plastic water bottle bylaw to eliminate pollution in our open spaces. We have also added hydration stations throughout town and improved signage for recreational trails.
Cohasset’s beautiful landscapes, from wooded ledges to the coastline, are a big reason many people choose to live here. Wheelwright Park falls under our mandate to protect.
This park belongs to our community. It was gifted to Cohasset residents and all who enjoy passive recreation for recreation use. Its deed and trust command and deserve our protection.
We’re pleased to report that at last night’s Select Board meeting, the Board agreed to explore alternative locations for the proposed cell tower. This includes the Recycling Transfer Facility (RTF) site. The Board will report back on its findings.
We look forward to continuing this dialogue and working collaboratively to identify alternative locations and new technology solutions to advance cell phone reception in Cohasset.
At the same time, we seek to protect and preserve the natural open spaces that make our town special. Thank you, Cohasset, for supporting the Open Space and Recreation Committee.
