🚜🌱 Grazing beef cattle in the U.S. is often compared to β€œremoving 6 billion cars from the road each year”—because regenerative grazing can help improve soil health and support carbon storage. With healthier grasslands, plants can also pull in carbon from the atmosphere, beyond emissions reductions.

Many Western States on fire, most recently in Central Oregon and Eastern Washington. Even after the fire has gone through, care of smoke inhalation is still a concern.
πŸ™ Prayers to families, cattlemen and women, livestock and the land

Sharing useful information from our friends at Washington State Department of Agriculture:

For those who are beginning the recovery process after a wildfire, caring for livestock can bring another layer of worry and hard decisions.

Our Caring for Livestock After a Wildfire flyer offers guidance on what to watch for in the days and weeks after a fire, including burns, smoke exposure, changes in eating or drinking, and when to contact a veterinarian. Animals can develop complications even when injuries aren’t immediately visible, so daily checks are important.

Caring for Livestock After a Wildfire flyer:https://cms.agr.wa.gov/WSDAKentico/Documents/638-CaringForLivestockAfterWildfire.pdf

We also have a resource on wildfire smoke and livestock. A few things to keep in mind.

Caring for animals during wildfire smoke:https://cms.agr.wa.gov/WSDAKentico/Imported/FireSmokeLivestockUCDavisPublication.pdf

β€’ Limit strenuous activity while smoke is present.
β€’ Provide plenty of fresh water.
β€’ Reduce dust with low- or dust-free feed.
β€’ Give animals time to recover β€” smoke-related airway damage can take several weeks.
β€’ Contact your veterinarian if animals are coughing, having difficulty breathing, or showing other concerning symptoms.

We know ranchers & farmers will do just about anything for their animals. But as you work through recovery, remember to take care of yourself, too. Your health matters, and you need to be healthy to care for your animals.

BREEDER UPDATE

A few changes are in store! Aberdeen breeders are enjoying faster turnaround on our DNA results since our move to the Missouri office. We are looking forward to an exciting new procedure that will speed up turnaround even more – we hope to release it in August. Stay tuned!

Effective August 1, before samples will be submitted to Neogen, payment must be made for DNA. You can enclose a check with your samples or complete the credit card information on the submission form.

Access to the online registration portal and Aberdeen cattle registration will be limited to members. Nonmembers may still transfer animals at twice the member rate, with payment due before the transfer is completed. Members with accounts over 60 days past due will have their online accounts frozen until payment in full is made.

As always, reach out to the office or a board member with questions or concerns.
