The Upper Missouri Waterkeeper organization is actively involved in helping to protect and improve Montana water quality. They recently posted the below, which involves all of the nations rivers, streams and wetlands. A link follows if you are interested in signing a petition.

EPA Proposes Stripping Federal Protections from Millions of Miles of Waterways

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers have proposed further narrowing the definition of “Waters of the United States” (WOTUS), potentially eliminating Clean Water Act protections for at least 95% of individual wetlands and 79% of rivers and streams in the continental U.S.

This extreme reinterpretation would limit federal protections for tributary rivers, streams, and lakes to those with standing or continuously flowing water throughout the year. It would also drastically reduce protections for wetlands that don’t have continuous surface water connections.

If a waterbody loses its legal status under the Clean Water Act, the polluters are free to dump industrial waste, sewage, toxins, carcinogens, and even radioactive materials into it without federal safeguards. That contamination flows into drinking water supplies, kills fish, sickens children, undermines local economies, and puts families at risk.

Comments are due by October 9. Leave a comment today condemning this reckless redefinition!
