Week 7 of 12 is nearly in the books for Recruit Academy 26-1.

Every morning starts with PT. From there, these recruits have trained on fire attack, search, ground ladders, forcible entry, firefighter survival skills, high-rise fires and building construction. Several of these shots are from live fire evolutions, where they've put their fire attack and search training to work.

Still ahead: roof ops, vehicle extrication, EMS and much more.

The academy pushes these recruits to find out what they're capable of, physically and mentally, through demanding drill ground sessions, rigorous classroom work and challenging physical conditioning. That's how they'll be ready to respond to your emergencies when they hit the line.

Five weeks to go. There's more work ahead, but this class is putting in the effort. Wish them luck as they finish strong!

There are some moments in this job that are hard to put into words.

This week, firefighters from Coeur d’Alene, along with our families, made the trip to Colorado Springs to honor John, Frank, and every firefighter whose name is remembered here.

Being here with our families makes it even more meaningful. Our families are the ones who understand the sacrifices that come with this profession, the missed holidays, birthdays, and events. They also understand why we continue to show up for one another.

Standing among thousands of firefighters and their families, surrounded by the names and stories of those who gave everything, is a powerful reminder of what this brotherhood really means.

We came here for John and Frank. We came for their families. And we came for every firefighter who never made it home.

It’s an honor to stand alongside our brothers and sisters from across the country and to carry these names home with us.

We remember them. We honor their families. And we will never forget.

Labor Day is a good day to remember what this job used to look like.

A century ago, across the country, firefighters lived at the station. Continuous duty: home for a meal, an occasional day off, 84 hours a week, about 29 cents an hour. No pension in most cities, and nothing for a family if a firefighter didn't make it home.

In 1917, firefighters in Tacoma won a two-platoon schedule: two shifts instead of one endless one. One of them said it felt like being let out of jail. The next year the IAFF was founded, and that fight became a national one.

What changed wasn't only the hours. It was the whole idea of what a fire department owes the people it serves. Crews should be trained to a standard, equipped to a standard, and staffed to a standard. Those things exist because firefighters organized and asked for them, and they play a direct role in the quality of the response a family gets on the worst day of their life.

The work those firefighters started isn't finished. Staffing is the clearest example. Fire attack, search, ventilation, water supply. All of it has to happen in the first few minutes, and how fast it happens depends on how many firefighters are on scene. Proper staffing is a direct measure of how well a community is protected.

Today we thank those who worked to improve the labor conditions of the firefighters who came after them, and to ensure a safer future for our community.

We will continue to uphold the oath we swore and work toward a safer Coeur d'Alene for us all.

🙏🐾 PRAY FOR APPA: KOOTENAI COUNTY SHERIFF OFFICE K9 APPA FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE AFTER BEING SHOT DURING SWAT RESPONSE

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office says K9 Appa is currently fighting for his life after being shot Tuesday night during the armed-suspect response near Wolf Lodge Creek Road and East Alder Creek Road.

Deputies responded at approximately 8:20 p.m. after reports of a suspicious armed man who had contacted children in the area.

According to KCSO, the suspect pointed a fi***rm at a deputy before fleeing. Appa tracked the suspect while the Kootenai County Regional SWAT Team responded. The suspect fired several rounds, striking and injuring Appa.

Several minutes later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was later pronounced deceased. The Idaho State Police is conducting the independent investigation.

KCSO shared the following update:

“Our hearts are heavy as we share that K9 Appa is currently fighting for his life.

Please keep K9 Appa, his handler, and everyone involved in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you for your continued support of our deputies, K9 Unit, and the entire Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.”

Three engines and a Battalion Chief from CDAFD as well as brothers and sisters from KCFR, NLFD and WFD are headed to Spokane to help out our neighbors with the ongoing wildland fires.

Today, we remember Battalion Chief John Morrison of the Coeur d’ Alene Fire Department as well as Battalion Chief Frank Harwood of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.

One year ago today was a tragic day, and we will honor our brothers for their courage and sacrifice.

We also continue to stand with Dave Tysdal as he moves forward in his recovery.

We would also like to recognize all the families, friends, firefighters and everyone in the community impacted by this tragic incident.
