Introducing a bi-weekly post we're calling...FUN FACT FRIDAY!

There are 2 species of wild strawberries native to North Idaho: Woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) and Virginia strawberry (Fragaria virginana).

Woodland strawberries are mostly found in moist, shady areas. The leaves are coarsely serrated and deeply veined and appear bright green. It produces white flowers on stalks above the leaves. The resulting fruit is a cone-shape with seeds on the surface.

Virginia strawberries are found in drier, sunnier and more open areas but species overlap. The leaves are smoother with less severely serrated edges. The leaves are a bluish green. Virginia strawberries bloom early in spring with white or pink flowers below the leaves. The resulting fruit is round with embedded seeds.

Both species are spread by above ground runners. Both are valuable to wildlife—the flowers produce nectar and pollen and the vegetation supports moth and butterfly larvae. The berries are tiny, but very tasty (if you can beat the birds to them).

Visit the marshy area of English Point at the north end of Hayden Lake and you can see both species growing side by side.

Where have you found wild strawberries in North Idaho?

Attention All,
We are cancelling the visit to the Rose Creek Preserve in Pullman on Saturday, May 30. A scouting visit to the preserve determined there is not enough there to see to justify a 200-mile round trip. We are substituting a plant walk at the Idaho Fish and Game Tall Pine property on the east side of Hayden Lake. Our past visits to the site have been delightful. The easy walk along the forest road encounters diverse habitat types. The site is a bit hard to find so we will arrange a caravan to the property from the English Point Trails parking lot at the east end of Lancaster Road. Meet at the parking lot at 9:30 am.

Our next scheduled event is the plant walk at Rathdrum Mountain Park on Wednesday, May 27, at 10:00 am. This event is unchanged. This week the flowers were spectacular. We will meet directly at the site's parking lot at 8973 W Barrett Drive, Rathdrum. Follow the paved road all the way to the top.

For both of these walks, please wear good shoes and dress to protect yourself from the weather and insects. Bring plenty of water and lunch or a snack. Please let me know if you are planning to attend so we know to watch for you.

The Bureau of Land Management has a beautiful native plant garden at their Blackwell Island Recreation Site. As with all gardens, it needs some maintenance--primarily w**d removal. The Calypso Chapter has sponsored signs at the site and helped out with w**ding. The BLM is again in need of help for w**d removal. This can be accomplished on your schedule. If interested, contact LeAnn Abell at [email protected]. Thanks.

April Plant Walk/BioBlitz. Sunday, April 26.

We will explore the Idaho Fish & Game property on the south end of Cocolalla Lake as part of the worldwide City Nature Challenge BioBlitz. This is a joint event with the Idaho Master Naturalist chapter of Sandpoint.
We will carpool from the northeast corner of the Hayden Walmart at 12:30 and plan to arrive at the site at 1:00 pm.
You are invited to document the plants and animals we see on iNaturalist. The app is free to download.
The Cocolalla property contains both wetlands and uplands. If you would like to explore the wetland portion, it would be useful to have footwear that you don't mind getting wet.
As always be sure to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate protection from the weather.
