How many HR headaches could be avoided with better documentation?

At this month's meeting with Sara Morrison, we discussed a topic every HR professional encounters:

Documentation.

Some of the biggest takeaways:

• Apply policies consistently, not based on personal interpretation.

• Document observable behaviors and facts.

• Leave assumptions and emotions out of written records.

• Follow up important conversations in writing.

• If it isn't documented, it didn't happen.

While documentation may not be the most exciting part of HR, it is often one of the most important tools for protecting both employees and organizations.

Thank you to our presenter and everyone who contributed to a thoughtful discussion.

Every policy, performance review, job description, and manager email carries more weight than we often realize. The words we choose shape expectations, influence manager decisions, impact employee performance, and can either reduce or increase organizational risk.

Join us June 17th with Sara Morrison, SHRM-CP, as she explores how HR professionals can strengthen documentation, improve consistency, support manager accountability, and create communication that drives better outcomes across the organization.

Happy International HR Day!

There’s something powerful about being in a room full of HR professionals who are committed to learning, growth, and creating better workplaces.

Today, we had the opportunity to hear from Kenny Hassenteuffel, as he shared practical insights on maneuvering difficult performance conversations from addressing underperformance early to helping employees grow from struggling to succeeding.

Performance conversations are rarely easy, but they are some of the most important conversations leaders can have. Strong communication, accountability, and clarity can make all the difference in helping employees and organizations thrive.

It felt especially meaningful to spend International HR Day surrounded by professionals dedicated to supporting people, strengthening workplace culture, and continuously growing in their craft.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared perspectives, and continues doing the often unseen work that helps workplaces function every day.
