Speaking of BWO's, as we should be, here is an article from Hatch magazine that is timely.

Spring provides a fresh start. A rebirth, if you will. Warmer days and greening of the landscape tells me hatches are on the way. For my home waters and countless other trout streams across the country, the blue-winged olive hatch is one of the season’s first, but it’s also one that provides exc...

Excellent tips on tying flies from Hatch magazine. This was written for beginners, but a great read for everyone who's been tying for years too.

Now that you’re squared away with the right fly tying tools and materials (and if you’re not, be sure to check out our primer on tools and materials for beginning tyers), it’s time to get to work and start tying. As you begin to experiment with your first patterns and develop your skills, smal...

While doing some genealogy research, I came across this story, printed in 1877. Note the immediate declaration of not being responsible at the beginning, and then the mention of a lawyer at the end.....Two warning signs for sure (with the third being a story about catching fish!)

Update on Senate Bill 1300 (changing the Director of IDFG [and others] from Commission appointee to Governor appointee) from Idaho Wildlife Federation Executive Director Nick Fasciano:

All,

As you may have seen, S 1300 passed the House on a 41-29 vote and is now on the Governor's desk. There was a fair amount of debate, but unfortunately the bill went through. It would be uncommon for a Governor to veto a bill that gives the Governor more authority, but we'll see.

We were always going to have to work to figure out how to make sure that science-based management and hunting, fishing, and trapping rights remain intact long-term here in Idaho, so this just adds another layer to that. Thanks to all for the work and collaboration on this.

Thanks,
Nick

Just in case you are not following this bill, this is to make the IDFG Director (and others) an appointee by the Governor, rather than the F&G Commission. THIS BILL HAS REACHED THE IDAHO HOUSE FLOOR.

Below is from the Idaho Conservation League:

Thank you for taking action earlier on Senate Bill 1300. We wanted to give you an update and ask that you again reach out to your representative, as this bill is now on the Idaho House floor.

Senator Okuniewicz (R-Hayden) introduced Senate Bill 1300 that would remove the authority from the independent Idaho Department of Fish & Game (IDFG) Commission, the Idaho Parks & Recreation (IDPR), and the Idaho Transportation Department to hire their respective directors. Instead, the Governor would appoint these positions.

Senate Bill 1300 violates a key condition of the Harriman Gift Agreement when the Harriman brothers gifted the family’s Railroad Ranch to the state of Idaho as Idaho’s first state park.
Senate Bill 1300 breaches that binding agreement, revising Idaho law to make the head of IDPR a political appointee of the Governor.
Independent oversight is important to Idaho voters–In 1938, 76% of Idaho voters approved the establishment of professional wildlife management through IDFG–Idaho’s first voter led initiative.

It is vital that we protect Idaho’s natural resources. Political pressure surfaces in debates over fish and game budgets, management of game farms, and changes to hunting seasons, bag limits, and access. Expanding political influence would threaten its integrity and undermine the original intent of creating an independent, balanced body to protect and preserve the fish and wildlife that belong to all Idahoans.

Take Action today! Click this link (https://idahoconservation.quorum.us/campaign/157678/) to the ICL website to send a prewritten letter to all Idaho representatives, or send your own directly.

Tell your Representative to vote NO! on SB 1300, and let them know your own personal experience with public lands and Harriman State Park. You can also call by looking up phone numbers at the Who's My Legislator website.
