A multi-agency training took place last night in the canyon of the Shoshone River just west of the Cody city limits. Agencies included PCSAR, Big Horn County SAR, Cody Regional Heath EMS, Cody Regional Health Wilderness Team, Cody Regional Health ED, Guardian Medical Flight, and the Bureau of Land Management. The exercise simulated an ATV crash with 4 occupants. Patients were accessed, assessed for medical needs on scene, and transported via ground ambulance or helicopter as needed. This would be considered an MCI, also known as a multi-casualty incident. By definition this means that there are more patients than there are resources on scene. Special consideration was given to each patient by medical personnel on site which included initial treatment and triage for those with the most serious injuries and immediate need for medical treatment. Additional photos below show a patient as they are transitioned up a scree slope via a rope system and a litter.

Training. Mission. Training. Repeat. The last couple of months have kept PCSAR members on their toes and this weekend was no exception. On Saturday, the PCSAR rope team completed their quarterly training with Bighorn County SAR members at Northwest College. PCSAR rope team members run through various high angle scenarios and execute the most appropriate response and proper procedures for each exercise. Special thanks to Northwest College Outdoor Recreation for use of their climbing wall.

PCSAR WY11-16-26: Three climbers from Bozeman and Red Lodge were climbing a multi-pitch route in the Reef Creek area of Crandall. A 23 year-old female fell approximately 25 feet after two pieces of rock protection (devices or techniques which climbers can attach themselves to the rock to shorten the distance of a fall) didn’t hold her fall. The third piece of protection held her fall and the other two individuals in the party were able to lower her to the ground. Guardian Flight and CRH EMS were dispatched to the scene with PCSAR. The female sustained only minor injuries and the party began hiking to the road for assistance. They were initially contacted by a Guardian Flight paramedic and two PCSAR members who assessed the climber’s injuries. It was determined she could walk the remaining distance to the staging area next to Highway 296 where she was further examined by CRH EMS. Her injuries were mostly scrapes and bruises and thankfully, the individual was wearing a helmet. The party returned to Red Lodge and PCSAR cleared back to Cody. Total time in service was 3 hours.

How many SAR professionals can you fit in a rescue basket? We think the answer is two but thankfully it didn’t leave the ground during this exercise. PCSAR members of the Wyoming Hoist Team traveled to Guernsey, Wyoming this week for bi-annual training with the Wyoming Army National Guard, Big Horn County SAR and Sheridan area SAR members. PCSAR Coordinator Bill Brown and PCSAR Members Dr. Elise Lowe, Michael Poulsen, and Scott Stingley received additional hoist training during simulated missions with helicopter operations. We’re so fortunate to have such dedicated SAR members in Northwestern Wyoming and we are proud of our PCSAR members and their commitment to safety in the backcountry. The members from PCSAR used communications equipment purchased by PCSAR Foundation to maintain safe and reliable communications with the Army Air Crew.
