Florida Frontiers Florida Frontiers: The Weekly Radio Magazine of the Florida

Florida Frontiers: The Weekly Radio Magazine of the Florida Historical Society is a weekly, half-hour radio program airing on public radiostations throughout the state beginning in January 2009. The program is a combination of interview segments and produced features covering history-based events, exhibitions, activities, places and people in Florida. We explore the relevance of Florida history to contemporary society and promote awareness of heritage and culture tourism options in the state.

The latest episode of Florida Frontiers Television, Miami’s Freedom Tower, will air on PBS affiliates throughout the state in September. Built in 1925 as the home of the Miami Daily News, Miami’s Freedom Tower became the Federal Processing Center for hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974.

Fort Charlotte in Nassau, Bahamas was built in 1789 by governor Lord John Murray Dunmore, and named after the wife of King George III. The fort was intended to protect the western entrance to Nassau Harbour, but a poor design and cost overruns earned it the name “Dunmore’s Folly.” This is just one of the places we will be visiting during our private custom tour of Nassau during the Florida Historical Society 2027 Conference Cruise, May16-21. We’ll also talk about the free Black settlement called Negro Fort at Prospect Bluff, which was destroyed by Andrew Jackson in 1816.
