Think Blue Too: Protecting Waterways for Future Generations

The H2O Think Blue Too movement is built around a simple but powerful responsibility: protecting our beaches, waterways, rivers, lakes, and coastal areas so they remain clean, healthy, and beautiful for future generations. For too long, environmental responsibility has often been spoken about as something adults must teach young people. However, today it is increasingly clear that Generation Z has an important role in teaching the older generation about stewardship, accountability, and the urgent need to care for the natural places we all share.

Gen Z has grown up in a world where environmental issues are visible every day. They see plastic bottles washed onto beaches, trash left near rivers, pollution affecting marine life, and careless habits damaging places that should be protected. Because of this, many young people understand that environmental stewardship is not just an idea or a slogan. It is a daily responsibility. It means picking up after ourselves, reducing waste, recycling when possible, respecting wildlife, and understanding that every action near the water can have a lasting impact.

This week on the Beach Safety Report, our message was simple:

Water safety starts before you leave the house.

Before heading to the beach, take a few minutes to prepare:
Apply sunscreen before arriving.
Stay hydrated.
Check surf and weather conditions.
Understand the beach warning flag system.
Assign a dedicated Water Watcher.
Make sure children and non-swimmers have properly fitted Coast Guard-approved lifejackets when needed.
Take a photo of your children before heading out so you know exactly what they’re wearing if you become separated.

A little preparation can make the difference between a great day at the beach and an emergency.

This week’s shout-out goes to all of the hotels, motels, resorts, condominium associations, and private property owners who continue to support water safety by hosting Drown Zero flotation stations on their properties. Your partnership helps make lifesaving flotation available when seconds count.

And as always, we thank our biggest partner, the Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation and the Endless Summer specialty license plate. Their support helps make our water safety education, outreach, and flotation station programs possible throughout Florida and beyond.

Get the tag. Help save lives.

From all of us at Drown Zero International, thank you for supporting water safety.

Know Before You Go.
And always swim in front of a lifeguard.

Drown Zero Station Upgrades in Cape Canaveral

This is a great example of what can be accomplished through positive collaboration and a shared commitment to public safety.

Drown Zero has upgraded our flotation stations in Cape Canaveral by adding street identification signs, making it easier for beachgoers and emergency responders to quickly identify locations during an emergency.

A special thank you to the City of Cape Canaveral team for suggesting this improvement and working alongside Drown Zero to make it happen. Partnerships like these help make our beaches safer for everyone.

Together, we’re proving that when organizations, volunteers, and local governments work together, great things happen.

Great job, Cape Canaveral!

Welcome Beach Island Resort to the Drown Zero adoption family!

Two years ago, Penny, the property manager, reached out after the owners experienced a scary rip current incident and wanted a rescue flotation station on-site. Drown Zero responded and installed one that same day.

Thank you, Beach Island Resort, for adopting your station and supporting the Drown Zero mission. They are also the host location for American Lifeguard Association’s beach safety live news network broadcast.

Beach Island Resort is one of many privately owned properties in the city where visitors can find a Drown Zero flotation station. We’re grateful to all property owners who have partnered with DZ to help make their beaches safer

Today Team Drown Zero is at the Hilton Oceanfront Melbourne Beach handing out Sun Bum sunscreen products and providing water safety education information to guests heading to the beach and pool.

We’re also introducing visitors to the Endless Summer specialty license plate and the incredible outreach support provided by the Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation for Florida’s beaches and water safety initiatives.

As we continue through Beach Safety Week, remember:
Know Before You Go
Check beach conditions and warning flags
Swim in front of a lifeguard
Keep an eye on children and assign a water watcher

Together we can help prevent drowning through education, awareness, and safety outreach.

American Lifeguard Association National Spokesperson Wyatt Werneth is back on air nationwide for Beach Safety Week interviews. Here we are speaking with media outlets in Atlanta, and Memorial Day Weekend coverage is already lining up with The Weather Channel and ABC News.

As families head to the beaches this holiday weekend, remember to “Know Before You Go.” Keep an eye on local weather reports, surf conditions, rip current warnings, and beach flag systems before entering the water. Always swim in front of a lifeguard, know your location, and make safety part of your beach plan before arriving.

Beach Safety Week is about awareness, preparation, and prevention because a little preparation can save a life.

Wyatt Werneth with the American Lifeguard Association discusses staffing shortages and safety concerns heading into summer.
