On this day in 1954 Congress passed the Western Oregon Termination Act. Promoted as legislation that would "set Indians free," the law terminated the Grand Ronde Tribe and cut off all government healthcare, education, and services to tribal people. The relocation programs associated with termination offered one-way tickets to urban centers.
