It is with profound sadness that we announce the Line of Duty Death of Retired Fire Captain William โ€œLutoโ€ Lutostanski Jr. on February 17, 2026, following a courageous, three-year battle with work-related cancer.

โ€œLutoโ€ proudly served the Baltimore County Fire Department for 26 years, dedicating his life to protecting the residents of Baltimore County. Hired on February 15, 1999 as an EMT/Firefighter in the 78th Recruit Class, he rose through the suppression ranks with honor and distinction serving as Fire Specialist, Fire Lieutenant, and ultimately Fire Captain. He retired on February 5, 2026, concluding more than two decades of exemplary public service.

Throughout his career, โ€œLutoโ€ served in multiple operational assignments across the County, including long tenures at Truck 8 in Fullerton, Engine 2 in Pikesville, Engine 16, and Engine 3 in Woodlawn, where he finished his career. His leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the job left a lasting impact on every company he served and every firefighter who had the privilege to work alongside him.

Captain Lutostanskiโ€™s courage was exemplified on January 19, 2011, during a second-floor apartment fire. Amid heavy smoke and rapidly deteriorating conditions, he and fellow firefighters located an unconscious civilian and began her removal. When the room flashed over, Captain Lutostanski shielded the victim with his own body, laying over her as fire rolled overhead - placing her life above his own. This act of selfless heroism reflects exactly who he was as a firefighter and as a man.

Beyond the job, โ€œLutoโ€ was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. He is loved by more than he knew, and his legacy will endure in the lives he saved, the firefighters he mentored, and the standard of service he embodied.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Lutostanski family and to all members of the department who knew and worked with Captain Lutostanski. Please keep them and one another in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Rest easy โ€œLutoโ€.

Today we remember the lives of Captain J. Miller and Firefighter Carl S. Dill.

Brothers Miller and Dill died on February 7, 1955 in the line of duty.

First-arriving units at the Westgate Shopping Center encountered heavy fire in the basements of a tavern and adjoining bakery, which quickly spread through the complex and threatened nearby exposures. Captain William J. Miller and Firefighter Carl S. Dill (Engine 4) advanced handlines into a newly built rear addition and down into the basement. As conditions rapidly deteriorated, other firefighters withdrew to the roof, believing Miller and Dill were behind them. Moments later, fire broke through and the roof collapsed. After hours of firefighting operations, the two members were reported missing. A search located a still-charged handline in the interior stairwell, and both firefighters were later found beneath the debris.

Captain William J. Miller, 44, served 18 years.
Firefighter Carl S. Dill, 51, served 29 years.
