Asha Kiran - A Ray of Hope

This week's 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 features 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲:
This is the story of Manjula who lives in a shanty home along with her husband and their 3 children, selling flowers and prayer material near places of worship to earn a meagre living. Her husband works as a part time daily wage laborer, while they struggle to give their children an education.
Their living conditions were so bleak that after our initial visit, our volunteers immediately took the decision of finding better accomodation, with the promise of supplementing them with partial rent, helped by a board member. After our visit, Ashakiran also assessed that the family needed further support and took on the sponsorship of their three children for the last 6 years.

In addition to their condition of extreme poverty, Manjula also had an accident while cooking and half of body suffered third degree burns including her face. Ashakiran is helping to raise funds to cover the cost of plastic surgery, hospital care and treatment. Unfortunately COVID 19 put a temporary halt on our efforts to help Manjula out of agony.
We will pursue her treatment in near future, by raising funds and remain hopeful that donors will come forward to cover some of the expenses.

This week's 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 features 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲:
Pratheeksha is an intelligent student and has ambitions to one day become a Teacher. Prateeksha comes from humble background, living with her parents and brother in a small rented home. When she was introduced to Ashakiran by a supporter, the family was living in despair with no hope of a better life. Her mother, severly asthmatic could not work, their father, a mason was the only earning member of the family, until he met with an unfortunate accident becoming bedridden. Any hope they had for better life and education for the children were instantly crushed.
Ashakiran intervened, took up the sponsorship of both the children. In addition, a board member made a donation to support the family temporarily, including supplementing rental income to help them move to a better accommodation.
The Moral and financial support provided by Ashakiran turned their life around, helped Pratheeksha’s mothers condition improve significantly, her father recuperated faster and he went back to work again.
Pratheeksha and her brother continue with their education and they hope to provide stability for their family in the near future.

This week's 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 features 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲:
𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐢'𝐬 story is a compelling one, a story of sacrifice and struggle against the odds. Meenakshi worked hard as a tailor and her husband as a daily wage laborer, a constant struggle to make ends meet and support their 3 daughters.
An Ashakiran volunteer heard about their difficulty in educating their daughters, who were at the time still in elementary school, and decided to sponsor 2 of the children. Ashakiran’s sponsorship eased their burden significantly and life continued, until Meenakshi was diagnosed with Uterine cancer. This development brought their small world crashing down, shattering their hopes for the future. Meenakshi raised funds for her treatment by selling the little jewelry and meagre ancestral land they owned.

Ashakiran recognized her continued worries about their daughter's future and promised additional support. With a GoFundMe campaign, volunteers collected approximately $5000 and an additional supplemental income helped with their medical bills and provisions. All the time staying in close contact with the family, Meenakshi's treatment and improvement.

We are so glad to report that currently, Meenakshi’s Cancer is in remission and 2 of her children will graduate in a couple of years. Meenakshi is hopeful for a bright future once again.

All of this was possible because of Ashakiran’s early intervention, care, financial & moral support. Meenakshi and her family is extremely thankful to Ashakiran, its volunteers, its sponsors and her well-wishers.

This week's 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 features 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲:
𝐍𝐢𝐤𝐡𝐢𝐥 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐫 is the eldest son of Sanjay and Sareeta, with younger sibling Sameeksha completing their family.
With both parents working overseas in the Middle East, the family was doing sufficiently well, until the economic crash of 2008 turned the the financial tide against them. The Kumars returned to India and invested their life savings into starting a business that failed to take off, leaving the family in deep crisis. In the meantime, with Sanjay's health deteriorating, it fell to Sareeta to provide for her family. Working two jobs was not enough for Sareeta to meet the growing expenses of her children's education, along with Sanjay's medical bills.
It was at this point that Sareeta reached out to AshaKiran for help. AshaKiran's India project took on the sponsorship of both of their children, Nikhil and Sameeksha. who were in grades 10th and 8th at the time.
With the financial aid and support of Ashakiran, Nikhil went on to get an engineering degree. In the meantime while Sanjay’s health deteriorated further, Ashakiran provided additional support toward his medical expenses.
Today, life has managed to turn around for this family, with Nikhil graduating with an Engineering degree and landing a job in a multi-national company. Sameeksha continues her education with Ashakiran’s help. However, Sanjay’s health remains a major concern for them.
Nikhil, Sanjay, Sareeta and Sameeksha are grateful to Ashakiran and its sponsors and have promised to give back to society in supporting underprivileged members, once they are in a position to do so.
