63% of former foster youth were on Medicaid at least once in the 12 months after leaving care in one national analysis period

Within the first 3 years after leaving care, 23% of youth experienced foster care–related barriers to employment

Employment Rates: Only 50% of former foster youth are employed by age 24.

A significant portion, 69% to 85%, obtain a high school diploma by their mid-20s, which is lower than the national average of 95%.

Between 22% and 30% of youth who age out of foster care experience homelessness during their transition to adulthood.

By age 26, between 31% and 46% of these youth may experience homelessness.

Many former foster youth struggle with mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

Over 30% of youth who aged out had spent time in a correctional facility by age 17, and more than 40% were incarcerated by age 20.

Approximately 71% of young women who were in foster care are likely to become pregnant by age 21.

By age 17, over 50% of youth in foster care have an encounter with the juvenile legal system.

A commonly cited estimate is that ~25% of former foster youth become involved with the criminal justice system within two years of leaving care.
By age 26, about 70% of youth who exit foster care as legal adults have been arrested at least once.

"I'm scared of him," the 5-year-old whispered, refusing to take the witness stand. The judge nodded, then did something no one in the courtroom had ever seen.

It was the hardest part of the trial. 5-year-old Anna was the only witness to the domestic violence that had put her mother in the hospital. Now, she was in a large, intimidating courtroom, and her father was staring at her from the defendant's table.

She refused to move. She just hid behind the prosecutor, shaking. "I can't," she cried. "He'll see me."

The prosecutor was about to ask for a recess when the judge, a man known for his stern demeanor, called for a brief pause. He stepped down from his high bench, walked over to the little girl, and knelt.

"What's your name, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice suddenly soft.

"Anna," she whispered.

"Well, Anna, I'm Judge Marcus. This is my courtroom, and in here, I'm the boss. And my number one rule is that no one gets to be scary in here. Not even him. I won't let him."

He pointed to the witness stand. "That chair looks big and lonely, doesn't it?" She nodded. "How about," he said, "you and I go sit up there together? You can sit on my lap. I'm a good shield."

He held out his hand. She took it.

The judge sat in the witness stand, holding Anna securely in his arms, his black robe acting like a protective cape. Shielded by the one man in the room more powerful than her father, she finally found her small, brave voice and told the court what she saw.
