The Boone Fire, near Coalinga CA (Highway 198 and Boone Lane) is currently at 12,252 acres with 5% containment.

Smoke from Wildfires produces a range of harmful air pollutants, from cancer-causing substances to tiny particles that can aggravate existing health problems, also increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Some health problems related to wildfire smoke exposure can be as mild as eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches and as serious as worsening of heart and lung disease, including asthma attacks.

"People who must be outdoors for long periods of time, in areas with heavy smoke, or where ash is disturbed, may want to wear a NIOSH-certified N95 respirator mask. Those with existing respiratory, lung or heart conditions should limit their exposure by staying indoors. Since wearing a respirator can make it harder to breathe, those with lung or heart conditions should check with their doctor before using one."

"Tulare Lake is an example of the dangers flooding has on developed and industrialized communities in an era of climate change, as raging waters unearth toxins and debris during weather extremes that are forecast to be more common.

The water at Tulare Lake is also becoming a breeding ground for pathogens. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has reported an incidence of avian botulism. They say it’s due to stagnant and warming water. The toxin was detected in a mallard duck and a white-faced ibis.

The agency is doing aerial and boat surveys to monitor the bird population and reveal die-offs. Dead and critically ill birds are collected as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the disease.

According to CDFW Senior Environmental Scientist Evan King, “Removing carcasses will be the first step of defense in preventing further spread. These are naturally occurring events to some degree and it’s likely some losses will occur, but we’re going to do everything we can to lessen the number of overall bird deaths caused by this illness.”

This is part of a combined effort by numerous state and local agencies to manage such a massive event. Wildlife officials expect the lake to attract many thousands of migratory waterfowl next winter.

Ferrier says the emergence and the ebbing of Tulare Lake has taught him a valuable lesson, “I’ve learned that Kings County can work together in a huge disaster.

“In this particular case, a lot of agencies have worked really well together and have come together for the ultimate end of protecting the larger space. It’s been such a great thing to see so many people work together so well.”

The partnership of agencies that has coalesced in response to the flooding of the Tulare Basin will continue to work together, as the coming El Niño weather pattern is expected to bring another wet winter."

As Big Oil pumped over $13.4 million into defeating climate bills in the California Legislature, the Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) launched a chilling campaign to sponsor dinners, awards ceremonies and conferences for journalists and the media. WPSA sponsored a “media dinner” on Tuesday, February 28 in Sacramento as part of .

The flyer for the event stated, “Journalists who play an outsize role in shaping narratives about state politics and holding lawmakers accountable will join business leaders to pull back the curtain on how they select and tell stories about California policies, policy and power.”

Speakers at the program included Coleen Nelson of the Sacramento Bee, Laurel Rosenhall of the Los Angeles Times, Kaitlyn Schallhorn of the Orange County Register and Dan Walters of Cal Matters.

More recently, the Sacramento Press Club announced that WSPA was a new “Lede Sponsor” of the Sacramento Press Club's Journalism Awards Reception that was held on March 29. Sadly, only two journalists, myself and Aaron Cantu of Capital and Main, publicly challenged the funding of journalist awards by Big Oil.

In addition to sponsoring journalism events in California, the Western States Petroleum Association has expanded its campaign to influence journalists nationally. WSPA and the controversial waste management firm Veolia North America sponsored events at this year’s Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) conference in Boise, Idaho, according to a report from DeSmog: scq.io/...

The agenda for the conference, hosted in Boise, Idaho, revealed that WSPA and the waste management company Veolia North America sponsored two of the “beat dinners” hosted on April 21, the article by Sam Bright reported.

When teams up with journalists, columnists and editors at events and only a couple of writers thinks there’s something wrong with this, you know we must be in deep trouble.

Critics accuse President Joe Biden of waging a war on the oil industry that is hurting consumers at the gas pump. And yet, on his watch, US oil production is poised to shatter all-time records set during the Trump administration.

US oil output is now projected to rise to an average of 12.8 million barrels per day this year for the first time ever, according to federal estimates released Tuesday.

For context, that’s about half a million barrels per day more than the prior annual record set in 2019. It’s also more oil than any other country on the planet produces — the next-closest nation, Saudi Arabia, produces about 10 million barrels per day, according to OPEC.

“As we replace fossil fuels with renewable energy, we have a big question to answer: will we show respect for Indigenous nations by honoring their authority to determine what happens to their sacred lands, or will we permit the same tactics the fossil fuel industry has employed for generations to sully our transition to lithium-based green technology?”
