Cohen (1939-2014) was an awarded and passionate professor of Biology at CU Denver and Metropolitan State University in the state of Colorado. He was also a beloved father and husband and was taken from this earth unexpectedly when his research vehicle missed a curve and rolled upside down into Coal Creek in June of 2014. Bob, the Bird Man of Colorado, was obsessed with a few creatures in his life,
like wolves, huskies, rattlesnakes, and his lovely wife Professor Cohen, also a passionate biologist, but over 40 years of his doctoral research went specifically into studying birds. He loved hummingbirds and tree swallows the most, and dedicated his research and time to the conservation efforts of the tree swallow in Colorado. When you drive around the state, it is likely you can spot his hand-built birdhouses along fence posts and roadside pulloffs in nearly every corner. As far as Salida, Colorado Springs, and of course all around the place he called home, Coal Creek Canyon. Dr. Cohen often took students or his family along on research expeditions to band birds, record songbirds, photograph wildlife, and of course, to hang and check on thousands of bird boxes across the state. It was his life's passion to prioritize wildlife conservation. Now, with a barn full of birdhouses and lumber and a rescue to maintain, we are hoping to spread Bob's love of birds across the country. If you would like to join our conservation efforts we will soon offer several items to start your own backyard wildlife refuge.
