BREAKING: Democrats now have the power to effectively abolish the Electoral College, without a constitutional amendment and without a single Republican vote.**
Tuesday's blue wave did more than hand Democrats both chambers of Congress. It put one of the most undemocratic institutions in American politics within reach.
Democrats won new trifectas in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Those wins could finally activate the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement in which member states award all of their electoral votes to whoever wins the most votes nationwide, once the group controls at least 270.
This is what voters built on Tuesday. Pennsylvania Democrats flipped the state Senate and won their first trifecta since 1993. Wisconsin Democrats won their first trifecta in over 16 years.
The stakes could not be clearer. Twice this century, in 2000 and 2016, the Democratic nominee won the most votes and lost the presidency anyway. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won about 2.9 million more votes than Donald Trump. Our system lets a handful of swing states pick the president while tens of millions of Americans get ignored.
A national popular vote would end that. Every vote would count the same, whether it's cast in Milwaukee, Montgomery or Missoula. The candidate with the most votes would win. That's how democracy is supposed to work.
The right knows it, and it's panicking. One conservative outlet has already branded the compact a scheme to "hijack the presidency," and opponents are promising immediate lawsuits, arguing Congress never approved it. That fight could end up at the Supreme Court.
But the power to act now belongs to Democrats, and they have to use it. Nothing happens unless these legislatures actually pass the compact and new governors sign it. Democrats have blown this before. Michigan's bill died during the party's last trifecta, and a Democratic governor vetoed it in Nevada.
The clock is running. To govern the next presidential race, the compact must reach 270 by July 20, 2028.
Voters delivered the majorities. Now Democrats have to deliver one person, one vote.
