🚨 “Rolling the Queen” – What Beekeepers Need to Know 🚨

In beekeeping, rolling the queen refers to a situation where the queen bee is accidentally crushed, injured, or killed during hive inspections—usually when frames are removed or replaced without enough care. It often happens if she’s on the edge of a frame or between frames that are pushed together too quickly. 😢👑🐝

Here are a few ways to prevent this from happening:

✅ Inspect frames gently and slowly. Always move them apart before lifting.
✅ Look for the queen early in your inspection and avoid moving her frame unless absolutely necessary.
✅ Use smoke in moderation—too much can cause chaos.
✅ Avoid cold weather inspections—bees cluster tight and she’s harder to spot.
✅ When replacing frames, tilt them slightly to avoid crushing bees on contact.

If you suspect you’ve rolled the queen:
🔍 Watch for signs of queen lessness: no eggs, increased aggression, or emergency queen cells.
👑 If needed, introduce a new queen—carefully and correctly.

💛 Thankfully, I’ve never rolled the queen. When I bought my very first nuc, the beekeeper told me a story about accidentally rolling his queen—and it stuck with me. That one conversation impacted me so much that to this day, I’m extremely cautious whenever I’m working around her. I move slowly, double-check her location, and treat her frame like it’s made of glass.

Have you ever had a close call? Or a lesson that changed the way you care for your bees? I’d love to hear your stories. 🐝👇
