The Colorado River's arithmetic, as of this month:
The river now yields 32 percent less water than it did through the twentieth century. Lakes Mead and Powell sit at their lowest levels ever — roughly 30 feet above the threshold needed to generate electricity. NOAA reports July was the hottest month in the 132 years the agency has kept records. And Southern California cities draw roughly 25 percent of their water from this river.
