This past Tuesday evening the Portales City council paused the PATS bus because it “wasn’t profitable”. They never publicly posted the need for drivers and for those that did apply, we are hearing they never were called back.

For those individuals under 65 and unable to drive this was the sole means for transportation around town that could carry wheelchairs and deliver people from door to door from medical appointments, ENMU, the grocery store, children’s school events, etc. So many people will now be pretty much trapped unless they have family in the area and many do not.

Thankfully this was not the final vote on this matter, it should be back on the floor in two months. So if this issue concerns you, for both yourself and anyone else that utilizes this bus please tag the mayor or any city council members in a post on Facebook publicly. Once the date is announced for this issue to be discussed again we will let everyone know and make our voices heard. We are human beings not just another line item in a budget.
