Do I stay—or do I go?

Having wrestled with that question myself in certain seasons, I deeply appreciate the legacy of Absalom Jones.

In 1792, he stood up mid-prayer and walked out of a segregated church. Not in anger. Not in spectacle. But because a moral line had been crossed.

There are times when it is right—strategic and faithful—to remain within a communion or organization:

To influence from within

To labor patiently for reform

To preserve unity where no moral boundary has been breached

And then there are moments when the line is unmistakable:

Silence becomes acquiescence

Dignity is denied

Integrity is compromised

How do we know the difference?

How do we take a firm stand without becoming hardened?
How do we leave, if we must, without abandoning grace?
How do we build something faithful instead of merely reacting?

On this feast day of Absalom Jones, I reflect on “sacred protest” — and what Scripture and church history teach leaders about conscience, courage, and ecclesial maturity.

If you are navigating tension in your church, denomination, nonprofit, or institution, this may speak to you.

:As pastoral leaders, how do we discern when we are faithfully feeding others—and when we are quietly leading from spiritual depletion?

Post Description:
I recently assembled a long-form article for my LinkedIn Magazine, Pastoral Excellence, built around a single conviction drawn from Scripture and lived ministry experience: pastors and spiritual leaders cannot sustainably feed others unless they themselves are being spiritually nourished. The article weaves together biblical reflection (Aaron’s rod, manna, bread, the table), leadership wisdom, and the reality of caring for souls while carrying our own wounds. It is not about techniques or performance, but about formation, nourishment, and the inner life from which leadership flows. I’m sharing it here to invite conversation—not answers—around what sustains us, what depletes us, and what faithful leadership looks like in this season.

For years managers have been encouraged to candidly praise and criticize just about everything workers do. But it turns out that feedback does not help employees thrive. First, research shows that people can’t reliably rate the performance of others: More than 50% of your rating of someone reflect...
