What would our homes, churches, and communities look like if we intentionally cared for those who are hurting around us?
The book of Proverbs reminds us of a powerful truth:
“He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, And He will pay back what he has given.” (Proverbs 19:17 NKJV)
When we show compassion to those in need, God takes notice. Whether someone is struggling financially, facing sickness, enduring hardship, or carrying a burden that others cannot see, the Lord calls His people to respond with kindness and generosity.
There are those who are poor in material possessions, and there are also those who are poor in spirit. Many are searching for hope, encouragement, and the love of Christ. As believers, we are called to be willing vessels through whom God’s love can be shown.
Jesus emphasized this truth in Matthew 25. He taught that when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the needy, visit the sick, or minister to those in prison, we are serving Him. Every act of compassion done in His name is seen by the Lord and has eternal value.
What a glorious day it will be when Jesus returns and makes all things new. One day there will be no more poverty, suffering, hunger, or pain. His kingdom will be marked by perfect peace and righteousness. Until that day comes, we have the privilege of serving Him by loving and caring for others.
No one person can meet every need, but each of us can do something. A kind word, a helping hand, a meal, a prayer, or an act of generosity can make a lasting difference in someone’s life.
The Apostle John wrote:
“But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17 NKJV)
As followers of Christ, His love should move us to action. When we serve God’s people in obedience and compassion, we are ultimately serving the Lord Himself. May we keep our hearts open to the needs around us and faithfully reflect the love that Christ has shown to us.
