My family was not comfortable with me actually walking the bridge. I did get to stand up a couple of times. It was well worth the trip, and it is something that can only be done on Labor Day for a few hours. The Mackinaw Bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan.

This Labor Day, I am planning to walk the Mackinaw Bridge. For those of you not from Michigan, this bridge is a walk of about 5 miles. The bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. Every year on Labor Day the bridge is closed for a few hours for this walk. I am going to push a wheelchair across in case I can't make it. I'm betting I can make it, and I will post the results, win or lose, on here. However, as polio survivors, you know I will give it one heck of a try, and that means whether I make it or not, I win. Keep showing the world what you are made of.

It gets me that the antivaxxers don't realize that polio is still alive and well in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A plane can leave Pakistan and land in the United States in approximately 20 hours and 34 minutes. Another plane can leave Afghanistan and land in the United States in about 13 and a half hours. Does that sound like our children are safe?
I don’t know any parent who would allow their children to play with a loaded gun and yet some will fight the government rather than vaccinate their children against a terrible disease like this.
It wasn't just that my parents had 2 children, about 2 and 3 years old in the hospital for an extended period of time. My parents also had a 6-year-old and a newborn baby at home. I am going to post this on my personal page also. I guess I got a little wound up and I am going to pass on what I have posted on here. I think it is too important, to not do it. Please feel free to do the same. This is not a Democrat or Republican point of view, it is a survivor and parent point of view.

Have you ever noticed that having had polio so long ago and at such a young age, has had the effect of making you a bit stronger in some ways and also more tolerant of your condition? My right leg is hard to deal with sometimes, yet I deal with it and only mention it as a fact, not a complaint. Keep on truckin' my friends.

I live in a retirement community now. After recent health scares, my family wanted me to be where I would be watched more closely. I have a nice little apartment, and I get 3 good meals a day. I am no longer able to drive. I'm only 77 and while it is nice here, I would much rather have my independence. However, reality says that this is where I should be. I now have to contend with the problems of post-polio, Agent Orange, and my age catching up with me. Thank God that I have some family members that care enough to see to my wants.

Looking back, I think I first started feeling the effects of post-polio in 1966 in Vietnam. That was 16 years after I had the disease. I had a lot of guilt over the years about leaving my infantry unit I found out just a few years ago that was about the time it often hits. People just did not understand about the disease at the time.

I will be having a spinal tap soon to see if that helps me at all. I will try to put the results on here.

It has been a long time since I wrote a post, for this site. I'm glad to see that it is still helping survivors. Post-polio just seems to go on and on. Hang in there and remember you are not alone.
