I’ve been spending more time with my ham radio lately, thinking about the club here, and honestly... thinking about what women are missing when it comes to ham radio. 📻💛

Ham radio is not just about radios and all the technical stuff.
IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE. 🤝

You turn a dial and suddenly a voice drifts in from miles—or oceans—away. 🌍✨ No apps, no noise… just real humans reaching out into the world.

It’s a great skill to have and perfect for anyone who wants to be a little more self-sufficient. When the power goes out, that little radio still works. 🔋🌬️

And it’s just fun.

You don’t need to know anything to start. You can just listen. 👂⚡

If you are a female and want to learn more, you are more than welcome to come listen in at my home and I can show you a little about it. 💛📻

It is with great sadness and disappointment that we are putting the STARS club on an indefinite hold. We gave it our best shot and worked hard to grow the club however, there is just no interest at all among women here in Sampson County for ham radio. We are not dissolving the club, just putting it on hold for now. Thanks to everyone that has supported us with encouragement, ideas, sharing about us, and offering help. We really appreciate it. Maybe down the road more women will develop an interest for ham radio but for now, in Sampson County, women are not interested. See you on the bands!

Field Day 2025 is here! STARS club members will be working from home as we just did not have the resources for a public event but that's ok! We are still participating in all modes: phone, digital, and cw! Any other ladies out there turning in logs that would like to do so under the STARS Club is more than welcome!

This is how STARS will be operating during Field Day. Since we don't have the resources to set up a portable field day station for the club and club members are very scattered about, we will operate individually under our own callsigns, however, when we turn our logs in, be sure to put the STARS Club Callsign on your submission KR4DJF. It doesn't matter what class you are operating in, it can still be counted towards the club score. Any ladies out there that will be operating individually on field day, please feel free to submit your log with our Club callsign KR4DJF. Thanks.

ARRL Rules:
An aggregate club score will also be published, which will be the sum of all individual entries indicating a specific club (similar to the aggregate score totals used in ARRL affiliated club competitions). Participants from any Class can optionally include a single club name with their submitted results following Field Day. For example, if Podunk Hollow Radio Club members Becky, W1BXY, and Hiram, W1AW, both participate in 2024 Field Day -- Hiram from his Class D home station, and Becky from her Class C mobile station -- both can include the radio club’s name when reporting their individual results. The published results listing will include individual scores for Hiram and Becky, plus a combined score for all entries identified as Podunk Hollow Radio Club.

2025 ARRL Field Day Has Categories for Every Operator

2025 ARRL Field Day is just three weeks away! The excitement is building. Most clubs have their activations planned. In the last two weeks, 350 more sites have been added to the Field Day Site Locator, with a total of 886 listed as of June 5. ARRL Field Day is a great way to connect with your local amateur radio community, for Technician-class operators to get on lower HF bands, to shake down your portable operating gear, and to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow hams.

If you can’t make it out to an activation near you, or you’d just rather get on for a little bit from your home station – never fear: there’s an operating class for you.

According to Field Day rules:

Class D stations are home stations operating from permanent or licensed station locations using commercial power. Class D stations can count contacts with any other station for QSO credit. If you’re operating on a radio plugged into a power supply connected to your wall outlet – this is for you.

Class E are home stations using emergency power for transmitters and receivers. Class E may work all Field Day stations. If you’re operating off a battery, solar, wind, or any other off-grid redundancy – you’re in Class E.

To determine your exchange for ARRL Field Day, use the number of transmitters in simultaneous use, the class of operation, and your ARRL or Radio Amateurs of Canada section prefix. For example, if an amateur in Nebraska turned on their shore-powered home station and operated in the event, they’d be “1 Delta November Echo”.
