AnimaNaturalis and several animal protection organizations will take the Government of the Canary Islands to court to stop the mass euthanasia of community cats. The legal strategy could save thousands of lives and challenge a measure that they deem illegal and contrary to animal rights.

"In the last year, Jimmy’s Farm, the farm and wildlife park run by farmer, conservationist and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty, has taken in four. A further 12 bears live in three other British parks. Are these captive animals the best hope for a climate-challenged species whose wild population has dwindled to 26,000? Or should they not be here at all? The fact that a 49-year-old pig farmer owns four polar bears could be the most bizarre farm diversification ever."

In 2000, only one of these Arctic beasts was resident in the UK. Now there are 16. Is there any benefit to captivity for this climate-ravaged species?

"Contraceptives have been used with varying degrees of success as a humane approach to containing populations of kangaroos, wild horses, prairie dogs, grey squirrels and rats on the New York subway. But experts are sceptical about the approach being a risk-free quick fix. First, the perception of gulls as an out of control pest species may not match reality. 'While it may appear as though gull species are thriving because of their increasing numbers in some urban areas, they are not faring well elsewhere,' a Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) spokesperson said. 'People will be surprised to learn that many species of gulls are red- and amber-listed across the UK – the highest levels of conservation concern – including herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls, which are both declining nationally.'"

Councillor has reportedly suggested using pills to control gulls, but experts say it may not be ethical or practical

"The question of anthropomorphism inevitably raises its head. Carr tetchily denies it, maintaining that everything wondrous about Masha – her emotional receptivity, careful social etiquette, even her tactical stealing of visitors’ socks – can be explained as intentional either by the growing academic literature on animal consciousness or the close observations of her clever vets. Altogether more plausible is his suggestion that it is Masha who is doing a kind of anthropomorphism in reverse, ascribing traits of her own species to Carr in order to make his behaviour comprehensible."

A superb meditation on animal companionship by a novelist whose pet helped him heal from trauma

"some parts of the Costa del Sol have implemented a cull. In 2022, the city of Mijas hired archers to shoot and kill them, and Marbella and Málaga councils have also allowed them to be hunted by archers....vets and animal rights groups have protested and Málaga has suspended the programme and is trying a different approach: shooting boar with tranquilliser darts, then getting them humanely euthanised....Some places have installed drinking troughs to allow the boar to drink without heading to beach bars for a cheeky cerveza. There’s also a pilot programme in Italy giving them oral contraceptives."

Spanish boars, driven from their habitats by drought and forest fires, have been raiding holiday resorts – and attempts to control their numbers have included tranquilliser darts and archery
