Scouts from across the USA, and around the world, can take advantage of the virtual railroading merit badge workshop on Saturday, February 26, 2022! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/railroading-merit-badge-workshop-tickets-214276124657

Designed for individual boys and girls, ages 11 to 17, this is a special opportunity for scouts to learn through the virtual use of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s images and artifacts, model trains and behind-the-scenes tours of historic equipment like the H&BT caboose No. 16 and the GP30 locomotive No. 2233.

All requirements are fulfilled on the day of the workshop, except for the “At Home Requirement,” from the comfort and convenience of your own home. Advance registration on Eventbrite is required on a first come basis.

As the Eagle Reporter for the Japeechen District I was honored to write and distribute this historic story of Katy Appleman.

* * * * * *

Katy Appleman of Fox Chapel made history when she became the first woman Eagle Scout in the Laurel Highlands Council of Scouts BSA. She successfully completed the Eagle Scout Board of Review on September 25, 2021. The daughter of Jodi Maranchie and Leonard Appleman, Katy led a team of youth and adult volunteers in removing the invasive Japanese Barberry bushes from a large area of North Park. Japanese Barberry is a non-native plant which has substantially negative impacts on the ecosystem of North Park. Along with choking out the native species, the Barberry harbors the Black Legged Tick. With Appleman’s team removing the offensive plants, the natural species can again flourish and the tick population will be markedly reduced.

A senior at Shadyside Academy, Appleman has challenged herself in school by enrolling in advanced classes such as Calculus, Biology, Physics and Chinese. She has her sights set on a four-year degree with a focus on Macro and Micro Biology. She credits her time and leadership opportunities in Scouting as a founding member of Troop 9380 in the Japeechen District of the Laurel Highlands Council with her many interests in the sciences. Her determination to continue to live by the Scout Oath and Scout Law will take her far in life and likely continue to make history.
