Books for Troops has definitely closed because the landlord has sold the building. We are looking for a non-profit that needs bookcases. 9 of them are of stained hardwood and measure 7ft by 3ft wide. They are beautiful and perfect for both soft-covered and hard-covered books. There are a number of other sizes, most 6ft tall. Any non-profit who would like them, they will be donated. If interested please e-mail [email protected] Thank you. Ellen Keegan

Books for Troops is no longer looking for a director and will no longer accept donations of funds or books. We have just found out on Oct, 3 that the building where we housed has been sold and we have to evacuate in two weeks. Plans for a book sale are tentative because of Covid. There is no further information available at this time. Thank you for your support in the last ten years. We are devastated by the news. Even though we were looking for a new director, I planned to continue on as Executive Director. We have had more than 10 successful years and I am grateful to all of you who have kept us alive through your support, and donations of books and postage. The real losers in this is the troops. I feel such sadness that we cannot be there for them any longer. Thank you again for your support. Ellen Keegan

Books for Troops in the past year has received a significant amount of money in cash, donated anonymously. I would like to thank that person for his recent donation. He also has concerns about the integrity of the director and of Books for Troops. If he would like specific information about the use of our funds, please send me a letter with your name and address so that I can respond to your concerns. It is unfair to accuse and not be able to defend oneself.
Please do so by e-mail or letter since I am not that familiar with facebook. My address is 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065 or e-mail: [email protected]

Books for Troops looking for a new Director.

Books for Troops, a not-for-profit organization founded in 2010 by Ellen Keegan is looking for a new director due to poor health. Books for Troops sends books and other reading material to all deployed troops around the world and within the states and to many VA hospitals within the states and in Landstuhl Germany. To use the words of one of the deployed, the books we send to the troops are "a temporary balm for a broken spirit, a comforting reminder of home, an infusion of courage and a way to diminish pain, boredom, loneliness and fear. If you would be willing to be a part of this program as director, please send your name to:[email protected].
Our office is in Latham, NY. The hours are very flexible, the training is hands-on,the procedures are in place. The office is well-organized for the tasks of sending requested books to the troops. We have excellent support of the community and hundred of others across the states. The reward of giving the troops "medicine for their mind" is very satisfying. If you are interested in helping us continue our work sending books to the troops, please contact: [email protected], telling a little about yourself. Please put in the subject line the word director. Ellen will get back to you.
Ellen Keegan will continue as director during this search for a replacement so our work will continue as usual. Thank you as always for your support. ERK

Since the pandemic, Books for Troops is only accepting books at the office., 688 rte. 9 in Latham, 200 ft. North of Bella Napoli Bakery in the Vintage pizza mini-mall, left off tr. 9. There are no bins at Halfmoon Town Hall or Clifton Park Town Hall. There are now 3 bins in front of Books for Troops office. It will remain like this until the pandemic ends.
While we continue to receive hundreds of books, our science fiction, fantasy,& military fiction shelves are almost empty. In addition we are always in the need of history and biography. These are the most popular of genre requested by the troops. If you have any of the above, please contact us at [email protected]. Thank you as always for your support.

Recently a man within the past week donated a full rubbermaid container full of comics. Thank you so much for your extremely generous donation that will put a smile on many faces. If you would like a tax receipt for them, please send me your name, address and the approximate value of your comics and I will send you a tax receipt. I know comics are valuable and expensive, You have made hundreds of troops happy, They will be sent a box a piece if requested of about 80-100 comics sent to the requesting person and then to be share with others. Thank you so much for thinking of us. Ellen Keegan Direcor

Books for Troops wants to thank those who donated thousands of books in the past few weeks that we would be proud to send to our troops because of their excellent condition. Thank you also to those who have NOT donated hard covers, romance or books in poor condition. We now have a huge inventory to choose from. We want to continue to send 80-100 boxes of about 40 books, DVDs

Books on CD, & puzzle books to our troops to help them to cope with boredom and lonli ness caused by the pandemic. Each monthly shipment, however, costs from $800-$1000 per month, depending on the weight of the boxes. While many people have been very generous with donations, money goes very quickly. We want to remind all those who donate books, that their books are only useful if we have the postage to send them. We are asking once again to make a donation when you donate books. Also any other people, organizations, businesses, etc that can send a donation, it will help us to continue our mission, even more important because of the pandemic. All donations can be made out to: Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065. A tax receipt will be sent. Please do not leave your donations in the drop boxes with the books. They can easily be lost. Your donation is a good way to thank another group of "essential workers" for their sacrifices and commitment. We also want to remind the troops that so many remember them with pride, gratitude and concern. Thank you as always for your support. Stay safe and healthy. Ellen Keegan

Since the pandemic, we have changed a few rules about donating books. One of them is that all books are donated outside our office at 688 New Loudon Rd. In Latham to maintain social distancing. We also ask now that you place all donated books in bags, not boxes. The boxes are too heavy to lift out of the bins. We continue to not accept hard-covered or very heavy or large soft- covered books. The troops do not want romances, as well. The troops themselves have requested that we send books only in very good condition. Any books that are old, musty, torn, yellowed or mildewed are unacceptable. When you are donating books for the troops, please consider their condition, their weight, the subject area, their size and their interest level.Recently we have had some people dump countless books on criminal justice, philosophy, theology, economics, etc. that are obviously text books and do not belong on a battlefield but in a classroom with a knowledgeable professor. This type of dumping is unfair to the volunteers who have to lift, sort through and get rid of these books. It is a backbreaking and time consuming effort when they could be boxing books the troops would enjoy. Before you donate a book, ask yourself would this book help a deployed man or woman escape their situation for awhile. Also ask will this book be able to withstand the rigors of being carried in backpacks or passed from person to person again and again. Finally ask, will this book fit easily in an already stuffed backpack. If the answer to all those questions is yes, we would love that book donated.
Thank you, as always, to all those who keep the troops in mind when they donate their books.

Just another reminder that the correct address for Books for Troops is 688 NEW Loudon Rd. in Latham in a mini-mall 200 ft. North of Bella Napolit bakery. If you are coming from the North take the Northway to exit 5, turn left onto 155; from the South take the Northway to exit 5 and turn right onto 155. Go about 2 miles on 155 to the major intersection of 155 & 9 (NEW Loudon rd.) Turn left onto rt. 9 ( New Loudon Rd.) and almost immediately you will see a mini-mall of 5 storefronts one with Vintage pizza. We are 3 doors down from Vintage pizza. The collection bins are in the front. I apologize for any inconvenience the incorrect address has caused you. Ellen Keegan

Books for troops would like to give you the correct address for our office in Latham. It has been given as 688 Old Loudon RD in Latham, when it actually is 688 New Loudon rd. in Latham. I apologize for the error. If you are planning to drop off books at our Latham office, please place them in plastic bags and not loosely or in boxes. Loose books and boxes makes it harder to remove the books. It has always been our policy to not accept hard covers and romance books. Still we are receiving them. Please do not donate Romances at all, as well as hard covers. We have a limited amount of space. Another genre that we have hundreds of is suspense/thrillers such as Baldacci, Grisham, Martini, Sandford, Coben, Woods, etc. What we really need are history, military history, novels, historical fiction, sci/fi, fantasy, women's fiction, action/adventure and non-fiction, westerns and mind/body. Action/adventure includes such authors as Clancy, Cussler, Ludlum, Silva, Patterson, etc. Please limit your donations to those categories. We are running out of room for our books and have been forced to recycle hundreds. In addition we are no longer able to send books to the VA hospitals because of the pandemic. Thanks for your cooperation. Ellen Keegan
