Tomorrow is National Slinky Day and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the toy's invention. Today we honor the woman behind the toy - Betty James. Betty was married to inventory Richard James and gave his invention the Slinky name. Betty took over operations of James Industries in 1960 when her husband left the family. Under her leadership the Slinky brand grew and flourished. It was important for Betty James to keep the original Slinky toy affordable telling the New York Times, "So many children can’t have expensive toys, and I feel a real obligation to them." More than 300 million Slinky toys were sold during Betty's lifetime and she was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2001.
