Today is Mountain Gateway Community College 62nd Birthday.
In the early 1960’s a group of local citizens in the Alleghany and Bath County area determined the need for a college to provide higher education in the area. Community leaders held several discussions and the committee determined that a two-year branch college would best satisfy the needs of the area. Initially, UVA was approached, and they were not receptive, while Virginia Tech agreed to sponsor the Clifton Forge-Covington Branch of the College. Thus, the grassroots committee accomplished its goal when the General Assembly of Virginia established the Clifton Forge-Covington Branch of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute on March 15, 1962.
Today, the college remains grassroots in nature serving our seven communities in over our 1,800 square miles. I believe we have far exceeded the original vision of that small group of local citizens back in 1962.
Happy Birthday to the thousands of students who have passed through these halls and the hundreds of faculty and staff who have made this college a part of their lives.
