📣 A quick reminder to keep a close eye on your pets when they’re outside.
One of our dogs got into a bufo toad this morning. Thankfully we caught it immediately. With symptoms potentially appearing anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour after exposure, we didn’t hesitate and started heading towards the vets office.
If your dog comes into contact with a bufo toad:
🐸 Wipe the gums, tongue, roof of the mouth, and inside the lips with a wet cloth for at least 5 minutes. Make sure to continuously rinse cloth in clean water to prevent spreading of toxins.
🐸 Watch for excessive foaming, drooling, red gums, disorientation, seizures, or collapse.
🐸 Contact a veterinarian right away.
Bufo toads are common especially during the warmer months and after rain. They’re often most active at dawn, dusk, and overnight. However, this happened just after 9AM when they’re usually not around. It was a reminder that accidents can happen in seconds. Had we not noticed right away, the outcome could have been much different. Always keep an eye on your pets when they’re outside and know what to do in an emergency.
We’re incredibly grateful our girl is okay and resting after a long day. Hopefully sharing our experience helps someone else be prepared.
