Connor B Judge Foundation Taking on NMO. NMO tried to paralyze me and take my eyesight, but I fought back. Now I want to share my story to raise funds and awareness for NMO. -Connor

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a rare autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS), attacking both the optic nerve (of the eye) and the spinal cord. NMO can and often leads to temporary or permanent blindness and paralysis. In most (nearly 80%) of cases, NMO is characterized by self-harming antibodies that attack aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel protein, leading to destruction of the C

NS. In about 20% of NMO subjects, this auto-antibody is not present, although NMO destruction is just as severe. Scientists are continuing to determine the underlying cause and pathogenesis of NMO. The Connor B Judge Foundation was formed in honor of beloved son, brother and friend Connor Judge, after he suffered a severe NMO attack that left him temporarily blind and paralyzed from the waist down. After two weeks in the neurology department of the Cleveland Clinic and 6 weeks of intense physical rehabilitation at MetroHealth, Connor recovered both his eyesight and ability to walk. However, he still endures daily pain throughout his back and legs, and many other complications from NMO. Most importantly though, his optimism for his recovery and ability to live life "normally" never waned. It is this positive outlook we hope to spread to others battling NMO, MS and other rare diseases, in our search for a cure.
