Happy Earth Day! Of course there's so much more that we can do to improve our environment and help our Earth, but this little list suggests small ways that we can embrace nature. Let's start shifting our attention together 🌿

Another frosty Spring day in Davinwood Park...hang in there, friends! It may seem like Winter is taking its sweet time to move on, but warm temps and softer ground are right around the corner! We look forward to gardening soon 🌱

Happy Spring!
The trees in Davinwood Park are budding, and so are the tiny ground plants! We're excited to start our Pollinator Garden Project this Spring, but we can't get too eager - just like the plants, wildlife friends are still walking up from Winter. We'll respect this natural process by taking time to learn about our neighbors, big and small! 🌳🐞💚

Spotted today in the Davinwood Park entrance garden: a monarch caterpillar enjoying some native munchies! 😊 Our colorful friend here will become a beautiful monarch butterfly and hopefully continue to enjoy a native habitat within the neighborhood 🌱

At yesterday's meeting, we revealed our very first project: a garden around the park entrance sign! This small garden invites our community to take a fresh look at our park and imagine what else we can do together.

Thank you so much to those who donated plants, supplies, and positive energy as this garden came together!
*An extra special thank you to Friends of Impett Park for the incredible support and encouragement throughout the launch of Friends of Davinwood Park!

We will continue to meet each week to discuss our shared goals and work on projects throughout the park. Please join us!

The next meeting for Friends of Davinwood Park will be Sunday, August 17th, at 10am. We'll meet at the playground!

There's nothing quite like seeing lightning bugs come out on a summer night...

It was a pleasant surprise to see dozens of these blinking beetles at Davinwood Park! In recent decades, lightning bug populations have decreased significantly due to a number of human activities.

Lightning bugs use their blinking lights to find and attract mates. This means that artifical lights can interfere with that process and reduce their ability to reproduce. When lights aren't interfering with the survival of lightning bugs, other habits like lawn care and landscaping can cause a different kind of disruption.

Lightning bugs reside in long grass and use leaf litter and moist vegetation to protect their offspring. Precious habitat opportunities are taken away when lawns and fields are treated with chemicals and kept extremely short.

What can we do to preserve the beauty of lightning bugs? We can turn off outdoor lights when not in use or even swap them out for dimmer alternatives. We can also maintain lighting bug habitats by keeping sections of shrubs and native plants for them, allowing grass lawns to reach at least 4 inches in height, and keeping leaf litter (it can be tasked and cleaned up - just don't bag all of it!).
