Cuyahoga River AOC

Cuyahoga River AOC The Cuyahoga Area of Concern (AOC) works to bring the lower Cuyahoga River and nearshore Lake Erie back to health.

For more information about what we do please visit our website. The Cuyahoga River Area of Concern (AOC), formerly the RAP (Remedial Action Plan,) is the lower 46.5 miles of the river, and 11 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, designated by the U.S. and Canada as one of many waterways contributing to problems in the Great Lakes. It is also a partnership between Ohio EPA and an AOC Advisory Committee - dozens of stakeholder organizations and citizens working to remove impairments.

Thank you to the City of Cleveland's Water Pollution Control for inviting us to their annual open house where we received more than 600 students' grades K-8.

Last week the Advisory Committee had the opportunity to instill in our youth the importance of keeping our river clean through guided activities.

Let's keep it flowing! 🩵

Ohio Lake Erie Commission (OLEC) Report Shows Significant Progress in Ohio’s Restoration Efforts across ‘Areas of Concern’

OLEC released the 2024-2025 Areas of Concern Program Highlights, providing an overview of ongoing restoration efforts, recent accomplishments, and significant milestones across Ohio’s three federally designated Areas of Concern (AOCs) along the shores of Lake Erie.

The Highlight Report outlines a summary of restoration achievements for each of the AOCs, which include the Black River, Cuyahoga River, and Maumee River. Over the past two years, Ohio’s three remaining AOCs have reached several milestones with the support of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and numerous local partners. Some of those accomplishments include completing a total of 62 of 106 Management Actions. Additionally, the program hit a major milestone in 2024-2025 by removing five Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs).

We had such a memorable and exciting day at the Slovenian National Home last week for the 2026 Cuyahoga River AOC Symposium ! 🤩

Thank you to everyone who joined us to share in a day of stories, learning, and connection flowing through our waterways. From the vital role of Mohawk culture in restoration efforts across national borders to powerful storytelling of the Cuyahoga River’s past, present, and future, this event truly highlighted how our work in the region continues to shape the flow of progress. 🩵

We were also proud to honor Dr. Julie Wolin from CSU as the 2025 Champion of the River for her lasting impact across the region! 👏

Thank you as well to our sponsors and funders, whose generosity made this event possible.
