*Open to the Public - Come learn with us!

This all-day seminar will cover everything from tree pathogens and gardening with continuous color to the birds of prey in Ohio skies. We will also cover safe and effective use of herbicides, get an update on TICKS in Ohio, and much more!

When: Saturday, September 26, 2026 / 8:15 am - 3:30 pm
Where: Educational Service Center / 6393 Oak Tree Blvd. Independence, OH (near I-77 & Rockside Road
Keynote: Enrico Bonello, OSU Professor of Plant Pathology, will discuss why forest pathogens and insect invaders kill our trees.
Cost: $65.00 - includes lunch

How to Harvest Warm-Season Summer Crops

August is a peak month for harvesting warm-season summer crops like cucumbers, eggplants, peppers, summer squash, and tomatoes.

See below for harvesting tips from the MGVs of Cuyahoga County:

Cucumbers - These can be picked at 3-5 inches for pickles or at 6-8 inches for slicing. Continued picking results in more cucumbers.

Eggplant - These can be harvested small or at full size using a sharp knife. Continued picking will result in continued fruiting.

Peppers (both hot and sweet) - Pick when they have reached the desired color. Continued harvesting encourages fruiting.

Summer squash (zucchini, patty pan, etc.) - Harvest small fruits for better flavor. Large fruits are tough and tasteless. Twist the stems.

Tomatoes - Pick when ripe and slightly soft to touch. Indeterminate varieties will continue to fruit if continuously harvested.

Celebrate National Dog Day with Dog Friendly Landscapes!

If your canine companion likes to hang out in your garden and has been known to occasionally chew on a plant or two, make sure to keep them clear of bulb plants like naked ladies, Asiatic lilies, daffodils, and tulips. Bulb plants may top the list of plants toxic to dogs, but there are many others that can cause GI distress and even death.

Rattlesnake master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is an herbaceous perennial native to the central United States. Eryngium refers to its thorny features, and yuccifolium refers to its yucca-like leaves. Popular in the florist trade, this architectural plant with its honey scent & globe-shaped heads is a pollinator magnet. Plant it in moist, well-drained soil in full sun for the plant to reach its maximum height potential of up to five feet. Historically, indigenous people may have used its roots as a remedy for snakebites, thus the rattlesnake reference.

Save the Date: Did You Know the MGVs of Cuyahoga County Grow Their Own Plants?

Yes, they do, and they're having a Fall Plant Sale!

What: MGV Fall Plant Sale
When: Saturday, October 17, 2026 - 10 am - 2 pm
Where: 4947 Commerce Parkway / Warrensville Heights, OH 44128
What: Native perennials, houseplants, perennials, herbs, and fall eatables bowls

Note: The MGVs of Cuyahoga County were granted use of a greenhouse on the property of Lyman Steel a couple of years ago and MGVs, Melissa Supler and Don Landek, formed the Propagation Committee. Since then, they've grown plants for Plants in the Park, the MGVs annual fundraiser, and for the Native Perennial Plant Sale at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.

Be in the Know with the MGVCC’s Tuesday Talks!

Last week, the MGVs at the Ben Franklin Perennial and Herb Gardens presented "Garden Myths" - the third of four monthly Tuesday Talks in the Garden. MGV Sue Pandoli addressed common garden myths and guided the attendees (13 Old Brooklyn community members and four MGVs) through an entertaining hour of sharing and debunking gardening tips handed down through time.
