Brown baggin' it with Nature in My Backyard: There's a Fungus Among Us

If you're a mycophile - today's your day!

Join OSU Associate Professor and Extension Specialist, Jim Chatfield, as he discusses all things mushroom. From breaking down leaves and other organic matter to recycling nutrients and teaming up with plant roots, fungi are busy working behind the scenes. Mushrooms play important roles in our ecosystems, helping decompose organic matter, support plant growth, and keep nutrients moving through the soil.

If you're looking to supplement your garden this fall, then stop by for native plants, succulents, lettuce bowls, herbs, perennials, trees, shrubs, and a few surprises - all grown by the MGVs of Cuyahoga County!

Plant Spotlight: Not a Fan of Autumn Colors? Try Shades of Red, White, or Blue-ish!

Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is a native small deciduous tree that prefers well-drained moist soils and part shade. A male must pollinate the spring flowers of a female to produce bright red drupes that birds cannot resist come autumn. The stems and leaves are often used to make a slightly peppery scented tea.

Flowering to***co (Nicotiana alata) is a tender perennial or ornamental annual that come evening fills the garden with its jasmine-like with a hint of honey scent which is a favorite of night-flying pollinators. Easily grown from seed, the plant grows from two to five feet in sun or part shade in moist well-drained soil.

Jindai Aster (Aster tataricus) is a late blooming perennial providing pollinators with a welcome fall treat. It prefers average moist soil in sun where it can spread easily if happy. Flowers have a yellow center growing from 3 to 5 feet tall unless they are nibbled on by deer.

Today's the day - join the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cuyahoga County & partner Dunham Tavern as they dedicate the White Oak planted last summer as part of a statewide OSU MGV initiative to mark our Nation's 250th.

*Walk Dunham's New Trail! * Refreshments! * Music!
