🐾 Hot take: Your puppy does **not** need to learn "sit" on Day 1.

I know, I know. The internet would have you believe that if your 9-week-old puppy isn't sitting, staying, spinning, balancing a treat on their nose, and preparing for college applications by next Tuesday, you're behind. 🙃

But here's the truth:

The things that matter most in puppyhood aren't obedience cues.

What's far more important?

✅ Building confidence
✅ Teaching your puppy that the world is safe
✅ Developing resilience
✅ Creating positive associations with people, dogs, sounds, and environments
✅ Learning how to settle and relax
✅ Building a strong relationship with you
✅ Preventing behavior problems before they start

A puppy who can confidently navigate the world and recover from life's little surprises is going to have a much easier time learning "sit" than a puppy who's stressed, overwhelmed, or struggling with fear.

Don't get me wrong—obedience skills are useful. But they're not the foundation. They're the icing. The real work happens underneath.

🐾 I'm getting a puppy soon... and you know what I'm doing?

Preparing.

Reading books. Making plans. Reviewing puppy development. Setting up management systems. Creating socialization goals. Stocking up on enrichment. And generally trying to stay one step ahead of the tiny chaos gremlin that's about to move into my house. 😅

And yes, before anyone asks... I'm a Behavior Consultant with over 11 years of professional experience, and I'm still doing my homework.

Why? Because every puppy is an individual, the science is always evolving, and good trainers never stop learning.

Too often people spend months researching a new car, a vacation, or a kitchen appliance, but spend almost no time preparing for the living, breathing baby predator they're about to bring home. 🦈🐶

🐾🚨 New blog drop: and yes, this one has some feelings behind it. 🚨🐾

This week gave me two very different, very real reminders of why we need to talk about ethical rescue practices.

1️⃣ I was publicly attacked for choosing to purchase a puppy from a **well-researched, ethical breeder**.
2️⃣ I had a behavior consultation with a client who was repeatedly **rejected by rescues**, gave up on adoption, and ultimately purchased a dog—who is now struggling with both behavioral challenges and genetic health issues.

Neither of those situations exists in a vacuum. They’re connected to a bigger conversation we’re not having honestly enough in animal welfare.

So I wrote about it.

**“Ethical Dog Rescue Practices: What Responsible Rescues Should Be Doing (and What They Should Stop Doing)”**

This isn’t a rescue-bashing post. It’s a *reality check* post.

Because when rescues:

* reject perfectly capable homes over arbitrary rules
* shame adopters publicly
* or make the process so hostile people opt out entirely

…those people don’t disappear.

They still get dogs.

Just not always from the places we would hope.

And when ethical adopters are pushed away, everyone loses—especially dogs.

If we actually care about reducing suffering and improving outcomes, we have to be willing to look at the full picture… not just the parts that fit a narrative.

Just a quick heads-up that I'm taking a little time away to recharge my batteries, refill my treat pouch, and probably spoil a few dogs along the way.

I'll be out of the office until **Tuesday, June 16th** and will respond to all calls, emails, texts, carrier pigeons, and social media messages when I return.

Around here, we believe love is love, dogs are family, and everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated—whether you have two legs or four. 🐶💖

Pride Month holds deep personal meaning for Valarie, who is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. This time of year isn’t just colorful celebrations (though we fully support the glitter and chaos) — it’s about visibility, acceptance, and the ongoing work of creating a world where everyone belongs exactly as they are.

At Sits ’n Wiggles, that philosophy doesn’t stop at people. It extends to every client, every family, and every dog who walks through our door. No judgment. No assumptions. Just support, education, and a whole lot of treat-based reinforcement. 🌈✨

Our amazing Pawsitive Access Canine Training Fund volunteers had a blast at the most recent Cleveland APL Project Care Community Vaccine Clinic!

Thanks to generous supporters, we were able to hand out:

Every leash, toy, and piece of education helps keep pets safe, enriched, and with the families who love them. ❤️

The smiles, wagging tails, and grateful pet parents reminded us exactly why this work matters. Together, we're helping create stronger bonds between people and their dogs while providing resources that make a real difference in our community.

🥟✨ Introducing the newest member of the Sits 'n Wiggles crew... The Dumpling! ✨🥟
Isn't she a cutie? She's 6 weeks old in this picture.

After months of research, planning, reading, puppy-proofing, and probably overthinking every possible puppy-related decision, The Dumpling will be arriving in 3 weeks (at 9 weeks old - a great age for them to leave their mothers).

As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I know this little potato comes with a lot of responsibility. Choosing where a puppy comes from isn't a decision I take lightly, which is why I chose to purchase from an ethical breeder who prioritizes health testing, temperament, early socialization, enrichment, and raising resilient puppies.

Spoiler alert: 🚨 AKC registration alone is not proof of an ethical breeder. 🚨
