**When the Safety Net Gets Smaller: Athens Faces a Critical Moment**

Athens, Georgia is facing a significant change in the resources available to people experiencing homelessness.

The **Homeless Day Service Center on North Avenue is closing**, ending access to important basic-needs services such as showers, laundry, mail and telephone access. At the same time, emergency shelter remains limited. **Bigger Vision of Athens has reported that its 36 beds can fill within minutes of reservations opening.**

For someone living on the street, these aren't small conveniences.

A shower means dignity.
Clean clothes mean health.
A mailing address can mean access to important documents and opportunities.
A meal means one less day of hunger.
A safe place to sleep can mean safety and hope.

**When a resource closes, the need doesn't disappear.**

Athens has many organizations working to help people experiencing homelessness—but no single organization can meet every need. This is why **community collaboration matters.**

At **Hands of Love Outreach**, we believe compassion has to become action.

We may not be able to solve homelessness by ourselves, but we can help one person at a time:

🍎 A meal
🧼 A hygiene bag
🧦 A pair of socks
🛏️ A blanket
❤️ A listening ear
🤝 A connection to someone who can help

The closing of one resource should not cause us to close our hearts.

Instead, it should make us ask:

**What can I do?
Who can I help?
What organization can I support?
What need can I help fill?**

When the safety net gets smaller, **our compassion should not become smaller with it.**

**Jesus fed the 5,000.
We feed the homeless one by one.**

God sees each person as precious, unique, and intentionally created.

Psalm 139:13–16 reminds us that God knows us completely. He formed us, saw us before we were born, and created us with purpose.

No matter what someone is going through—whether they are homeless, hurting, aging, struggling, or simply feeling forgotten—God sees them. God knows them. God loves them.

Every person has value and dignity because they were intentionally created by God.

You are not invisible. You are not forgotten. You are precious to God.

What a great outreach today. Provided 70 sack lunches and necessities for those on the streets. Thanks to the employees of Americold we had lots of backpacks filled with wonderful needful items. Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who share there time and love. People feel seen and loved when Hands of Love Outreach shows up.

Thank you Americold and all of those employees who stepped up and really blessed us with backpacks filled with great essentials items like blankets, wipes , tooth brushes tooth paste, flashlights, batteries and more. Saturday will be like Christmas for a lot of people in need.

Reminder, Saturday is our outreach. If you are volunteering please be at the church at 10 am to help with any preparations. To those we are serving we will be at the Alps Library around 11am. Thank you to all that help pray for a successful outing and that hose we serve will be blessed and encouraged.
