We survived Flying Solo with Jo Hoffberg!

Intensives are... well, intense. We are so proud of everyone who came to learn how to be the most magical versions of themselves and grateful to have a chance to witness authenticity, presence, vulnerability, and just soooo much richness in everyone's dancing.

More photos to come. But for now, Congratulations to all those who survived Flying Solo: Cleveland and a massive Thank YOU to Jo for sharing how she invited herself to the dance and for laying the groundwork for each student to envision what type of dance they want to be, starting to build the groundwork for the strategy and the road might have to become that dancer. Thank you to the cohort who decides to take a chance on an unfamiliar event to many in the region, and even better, the outpouring of love to @ saks1988 for helping to bring such such an amazing weekend to life!

Fun fact.... one of our founder's mother clapped out the blaze in her hair-- the blaze that had started upon trying to blow out her 7th birthday candles. Ste---ahmenn, **she** was so confused at the rhythmic clapping happening above her that as she looked around in confusion, tried to reignite her now singed hair. It was certainly a memorable--just like we know this weekend is going to be.

Chisomo & your bday twin , we are so grateful for you and the spark that you bring to life on and off the dance floor.

Cheals, remember that time when you walked in my house with your mom, and she gasped because I accidentally stole her painting that she had returned to the gallery to buy only to discover it was gone, which she would figure out 18 months later? Fun times.

Chealsia Smedley is a Frankie Manning Scholar and member of the Al Minns Next Generation Project. She first started dancing liturgical and modern dance at the age of 15. She has been dancing Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz dances since 2019. She loves to explore the ways that Lindy Hop invites people into the Black legacy of resilience, joy, and self-expression.
Outside of dance, she is a writer, podcaster, and editor who is passionate about storytelling that deepens curiosity, centers marginalized voices, and leads to compassionate action. As a teacher, she values connection to Black music and cultural values and the freedom to explore.

FLYING SOLO WITH JO HOFFBERG — CLEVELAND 2026

40 dancers. 13 hours. Train more efficiently, how to scaffold your own learning so new material actually sticks, and how to build a practice that makes you better when nobody’s watching.

One student described it as “learning how to dance even though you think you totally know how to dance.”

Another called it “the most influential workshop I’ve taken.”

Someone in Chicago said they cried and it was “the highest vibe I’ve ever reached in my dancing,” which is honestly the most beautiful endorsement we’ve ever heard.
