United States Boomerang Association

United States Boomerang Association The USBA is a 100% volunteer organization charged with promoting the sport, science, and art of boomerangs in the United States and worldwide.

While the boomerang has existed for at least 15,000 years in Australia, boomerangs as an organized sport began in the 1960s in Australia and the United States. In the United States, the boomerang movement was triggered in part by a milestone article on boomerangs in a 1968 Scientific American, and nurtured by the Smithsonian Institute which sponsored yearly educational workshops in the making and

throwing of boomerangs. The United States Boomerang Association (USBA) was formed in 1980. Now the sport is practiced worldwide, with team and individual world championships held every two years. Based upon boomerang sales estimates by the many cottage industry manufacturers, there are now hundreds of thousands of recreational boomerang throwers across the US and the numbers escalate annually. These people are competitive athletes, recreational throwers, master woodcarvers, casual woodworkers, aeronautical engineers, high school science teachers, artists, anthropologists, and every other walk of life. The USBA brings them all together into a society that offers a forum for discussion, a vast information resource, and news of the boomerang world.

Hello USBA Members,

The USBA is now accepting nominations for the 2026-2028 Board term. This is your chance to join up, and help shape the direction and growth of our sport over the next two years.
Nominations will run from now until July 31st, with an electronic voting period to run from August 1st through September 15th, finishing with in person voting at the US Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. So that the new Board can take the reins immediately afterward.

All nominees are required to write a candidate statement stating why you would like to be on the Board, what position you would like to fill, and any specific goals you have for this term. This statement can be short or long. Current Board members should do the same.

The Board Positions :
- President
- Vice President
- Treasurer
-Secretary
- At-Large member (x5)

All nominations and candidate statements should be sent directly to USBA Secretary Jason Smucker. [email protected]

Hey everyone!

The USBA is seeking throwers in the Youth/Developmental category; Under 18, or under 25 years old with limited team experience, to join the US Boomerang Team’s 2 Primary Teams at the World Championships in Indonesia this summer.
Presently we have 3 committed throwers, potentially 4, towards the Development Team but desire to send a full 6, or even 8 person squad.

We are open to fielding US throwers, and to supplementing that group with any international youth who need a home. The end goal is growing the sport and supporting younger throwers no matter where they hail from, so anyone willing to participate in that journey is welcome!

Please reach out to me; [email protected], Coach Rev Jim; [email protected] and coach Ed; [email protected] if you are interested in throwing, or if you know someone who may be.

Time is short! There is an April 25th cutoff to register for the WBC: https://www.wbc2026.com/registration and start the security clearance application that is required for the event (The throwing field is on a military base). Tournament Director Roger Perry says there is no trouble with registering and starting that process, even if you don’t end up making the trip.
The simple version of this is: REGISTER NOW, we will work details out together later! ;-)

Lastly, we know financial considerations are a big one, boomerang travel is generally self funded! The USBA is looking at sponsorship and fundraising options to reduce that burden. If you would like to help fundraise, or donate, please reach out to me and Rev Jim.

Stay Rad!
Rich Bower, USBA President [email protected]

Hello boomerang friends!
I am very proud to announce the USBA launched a revamped website this morning. Check it out at https://www.usba.org/

This is the result of a over year long effort by many volunteers who I will be eternally grateful to for their vision and work. Read more about them here: https://www.usba.org/welcome-home-html/ Our goal to to over time create more of a 'one stop shop" for boomerang information, history and data of all kinds here. So my simple request at this time is for everyone to:

1. Check out the website, click all the buttons, and let Jim and I know if anything isn't working! [email protected] and [email protected]

2. Help us build content! We can use: Historical and modern competition photos, boomerang crafting pictures and information, blogs to share, etc. If it relates to boomerangs, we would love to host it and preserve it!

3. Host a boomerang event this year! I don't just mean tournaments. We can also help with school demos, craftsmanship shows and much more. https://www.usba.org/outreach/ to get more of an idea.

4. Stay RAD and be awesome out there!

Cheers,
Rich Bower, USBA President

Hi Everyone!

We've got a friendly reminder to all throwers who want to attend the 2026 World Boomerang Championships in Indonesia to please register ASAP at https://www.wbc2026.com/ The organizing crew needs to collect initial deposits at the end of February.
And since the tournament is being held on an air base, they need time to complete everyone's admission clearances.

And another reminder that while anyone can attend the WBC on an international team, or just for the individuals. If you wish to be on the USA Boomerang team, attendance to the US Team Trails in March is required. All the important information for that can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18CcCT4PzY/

Cheers and Stay Rad!
