Back in July we found this stone, and we wondered if it could be debitage- the parts that flake off when you are making a stone tool. We weren’t 100% sure, so today we got to test our hypothesis using a scanning electron microscope.

Under microscopy, you can clearly see the scalloping from someone striking against a larger stone to make a tool, like an arrowhead. You can also see ripple marks, which show up from the force of a strike moving across flint’s microcrystalline structure.

Before Tremont became a destination, it was simply home to the families who lived and worked there. 🏘️ Professor Avenue back then was corner taverns, working men coming off a shift, and church bells you could set your watch by.

It was not polished and it did not try to be. The storefronts were modest, the sidewalks were cracked, and everybody seemed to know whose kid belonged to whom. The neighborhood carried the accents and the cooking of the families who built it, and you felt that the moment you turned onto the street.

Change came, as it always does, and much of that old streetscape looks different today. But the bones of the place and the memory of those quiet blocks still run deep. 🙏

Data entry involves going through city directories from over 100 years ago. Women were unlikely to be listed in these directories, and almost never with a career. Here you can see Mrs. R.D. Reynolds at 477 Woodland Ave, which is just one block from Tri-C’s Metro campus. She is listed as being an artist. I haven’t been able to find anything about her- can you?

This man has a gift for finding entire objects in the ground. This dish is from about the 1930s, found today as we closed up the site for the season.
