On Thursday night the Cleveland Institute of Art Glass Department put on a wonderful event for some of our members. The main demonstration was making a circus tent cake stand that was auctioned off live! In addition to the cake stand there was a flame working demo and a sale to fund the glass department’s trip to Japan.

Wow! That was fun. Last evening at , we hosted our annual artwork drawing. On arriving, our members each chose a numbered brass tag. Numbers were then drawn at random—when a member’s number was called, they would rush to the gallery to choose a piece of artwork from carta’s collection to borrow for the next year. This great Cleveland Art Association tradition has been taking place for over 100 years and never grows old. Our vibrant and diverse group of members support the visual arts in Cleveland through the proceeds of our drawing that are used to support scholarships for students at and to purchase more artwork from Northeast Ohio’s artists. We are grateful to our members for their support and making last night such a wonderful celebration of local art!

At our reception on Thursday, Davon Brantley was awarded the 2024 carta Eterovich Award. To make the evening even more special, we were thrilled to have Karen Eterovich Maguire, Anthony Eterovich’s daughter, there to present the award in person. This award is funded by a donation from the family of Anthony Eterovich, an artist and educator who headed children’s classes at for more than 50 years.
The Eterovich Award is presented to an exceptional emerging artist who has one or more pieces in carta’s collection.
In 2018 Davon received his B.F.A from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Drawing. Davon has gone on to having exhibited/curated in places such as: Bay Arts, The Museum of Contemporary Art (Cleveland), CAN Triennial, The Morgan Conservatory, Indianapolis Arts Center, The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, The Museum of Creative Human Art and many more. Davon has also been able to work with community organizations in Cleveland such as The Museum of Creative Human Art , Graffiti HeArt and has also furthered his investigations in Printmaking with DeepDive Art projects and the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has also participated in mural activities and being an advocate for getting the arts into younger artists vision.

Brantley implements self-portraiture and psychology within his work and is inspired by the dissociative behaviors that happen because of trauma and the repetition involved with these experiences. “I guide the audience through my own narratives involving experiences of colorism, racial stereotyping, and meditations on death, life, sexuality and masculinity,” says the artist. “Through the use of my own image, the viewer is presented with images of someone who is not themselves, who may or may not share the same experiences as them and someone who is actively disrupting expectations based on identity.”
