🇺🇸 A rare sight in rail preservation — two locomotives under one roof! 🇺🇸

This weekend, we bid farewell to Cincinnati Scenic Railway No. 1776 “Spirit of Lebanon”, which was a temporary stallmate to our own American Freedom Train No. 250 as it was repainted in a special commemorative scheme. The Midwest Railway Preservation Society debuted the vintage GP30 locomotive with a night photoshoot on Friday before its departure. Congratulations and best wishes to our good friends in Cincinnati!

Until Union Pacific Railroad’s Big Boy No. 4014 rolled through Cleveland, Ohio, yesterday, it had been a long time since railroads caused such a buzz in The Land.

With whistle stops in Lorain and Euclid, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive whistled across the massive trestle over the Flats before storming up the former Nickel Plate Road past downtown — all within earshot of the historic B&O roundhouse, home to our very own American Freedom Train steam locomotive No. 250.

Locomotive No. 250 and the Big Boy represent the same thing: a big, bold celebration of 250 years of American history and pride. With $88,000 left to raise, it won’t be long until No. 250 makes this kind of impression in Cleveland and beyond. 🇺🇸

📆 The Big Boy returns west through Cleveland on July 13, and just days before is the Cleveland Whistle Blow on July 11, which will feature locomotive No. 250 supplying steam to a wide variety of vintage whistles representing railroads and people across the United States! 🚂 June is a busy month for big steam locomotives in Ohio — Union Pacific Railroad Big Boy No. 4014 will head east across the Buckeye State, Fort Wayne Railroad’s Nickel Plate Road No. 765 is pulling passengers on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and our own American Freedom Train No. 250 will make its operating debut at the Cleveland Railroad Festival on June 27! 🚂

⚠️ No matter where you plan to be, safety always comes first — stay 25 feet back from all railroad tracks, do not trespass, and always expect a train from any direction at any time on any track. While you’re out, be mindful of others' safety, and if you see something, politely say something!

This year, locomotive No. 250 will make its own steam and look like it’s ready to roll into service, complete with boiler jacketing, paint, lettering and more. Along with an expanded cast of vintage props, crew members and actors, this year’s photoshoot will provide even more photo opportunities than last year! Proceeds from this event jointly benefit ASR and the Midwest Railway Preservation Society, helping bring Cleveland’s railroad history back to life.

🧑‍🎨🚂 The time is fast approaching for locomotive No. 250 to enter the paint booth — and a generous volunteer will now MATCH all donations and gift store purchases DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR up to $2,500! www.americansteamrailroad.org/donate

🎨 Once raised, the grand total of $5,000 will cover the remaining labor costs for PAINTING No. 250 in its striking red, white and blue scheme — and the paint is already on order from Sherwin-Williams, painting time is scheduled for the second week of June, and our volunteers and contractors are working almost daily to have the engine ready.

Now, it’s up to YOU to close this $2,500 funding gap to ensure our favorite locomotive looks its best for the Cleveland Railroad Festival, Cleveland Whistle Blow, and excursions in the future! 🫵
