Happy Cinco de Rhino!
To celebrate, we thought it was time for you to....
Know Your Ceratotherium.
The Ceratotherium genus comprises one living species, the White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). The "white" in white rhino is widely considered a mistranslation of the Dutch word wijd (wide) or Afrikaans wyd, which referred to the animal's broad, square mouth rather than its color. It is primarily a grazer and feasts on grasses. Using its low-hanging head, and swinging it back and forth it mows down the grasses spending half its day feeding. It can eat 125 pounds (56.70 kg) off grass a day. Males are mostly solitary, but females and their young form gregarious groups known as a crash. This sociality in mostly uncommon amount other rhino species. There are two distinct subspecies: the Southern (C. s. simum) and the Northern (C. s. cottoni). Southern White Rhinos have made a successful conservation comeback with over 16,000 individuals, while Northern White Rhinos are functionally extinct, with only two females left. Despite the Northern White Rhinos sad predicament, modern science, specifically Rhino IVF, offers a potential glimmer of hope. Using collected s***m and eggs, viable embryos have been created. Though the two living females are not ideal for the IVF procedure, surrogate Southern White Rhinos could be used to help bring the subspecies back and eventually even repopulate their former wild home.
