Lorena Borjas dedicated her life to supporting some of the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ+ community—especially transgender individuals and immigrants navigating barriers to employment, safety, and stability. Through advocacy, direct support, and community-building, she helped countless individuals access resources, find opportunities, and build better lives.

Her work is a powerful reminder that creating inclusive workplaces goes beyond policy—it’s about ensuring everyone has access, support, and the ability to thrive.

Bayard Rustin was not only a key figure in the civil rights movement—he was also a courageous advocate for LGBTQ+ equality at a time when being open about one’s identity came with significant professional and personal risk.

Despite facing discrimination, Rustin never backed down from his belief that everyone deserves dignity, fairness, and the right to live and work openly. His leadership helped bring visibility to LGBTQ+ individuals and pushed forward the broader fight for equality—both in society and in the workplace.

His legacy reminds us that inclusion requires both advocacy and action.

🌈 Honoring LGBTQ+ Workplace & Labor Rights Pioneers

Dr. Frank Kameny was a trailblazer who challenged workplace discrimination long before protections were in place. After being fired from federal employment because of his sexual orientation, he became one of the first to fight back—advocating for fairness, dignity, and equal opportunity for all workers.

His courage helped lay the foundation for many of the workplace protections we continue to build upon today.

At the 2026 Ohio HR Conference, we recognize leaders like Dr. Kameny whose advocacy reminds us that inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a responsibility.
