🩰 From first steps to perfecting techniques! ✨

Through our partnership with North Pointe Ballet, we’ve had the joy of welcoming young dancers into our center year after year and watching them take their first steps into the world of dance. From learning new movements and building their confidence to developing their technique and discovering the discipline behind the art, it’s been wonderful to see our students continue to grow with each class.

To be able to offer this class to our community is a reminder of why making these opportunities available to our youth is so important. We love seeing them discover something new, challenge themselves, and have fun along the way. We can’t wait to see all their hard work and dedication come together when they perform for their families in November! ❤️

🩰 ¡De los primeros pasos a perfeccionar la técnica! ✨

A través de nuestra colaboración con North Pointe Ballet, hemos tenido la alegría de recibir a jóvenes bailarines en nuestro centro año tras año y verlos dar sus primeros pasos en el mundo de la danza. Desde aprender nuevos movimientos y desarrollar su confianza hasta perfeccionar su técnica y descubrir la disciplina que requiere este arte, ha sido maravilloso ver cómo siguen creciendo con cada clase.

Poder ofrecer esta clase a nuestra comunidad nos recuerda por qué es tan importante brindar estas oportunidades a nuestros jóvenes. Nos encanta verlos descubrir algo nuevo, superar sus propios retos y divertirse en el proceso. ¡Estamos emocionados de ver cómo todo su esfuerzo y dedicación se unen cuando se presenten ante sus familias en noviembre! ❤️

From hip-hop beats to Latin rhythms, Carry On Tradition: Vinyl Edition DJ class is all about finding ✨el flo✨

Led by BARRiOBOY, also known as JP Hernandez, students are learning the art of DJing, mixing, and creating smooth transitions between songs. We got a little sneak peek as they worked on transitioning from hip-hop into Latin music, bringing different sounds and styles together through the power of music.

As a music lover who grew up in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood, JP brings a personal connection to the community that makes this class even more meaningful.

We love seeing members of our community learn new skills, explore their creativity, and create traditions to carry on to others!

Desde los ritmos del hip-hop hasta los sonidos latinos, la clase de DJ Carry On Tradition: Vinyl Edition se trata de encontrar ✨el flo✨

Dirigidos por BARRiOBOY, también conocido como JP Hernandez, los estudiantes están aprendiendo el arte de ser DJ, mezclar música y crear transiciones fluidas entre canciones. Pudimos echar un vistazo a su proceso mientras practicaban cómo pasar del hip-hop a la música latina, uniendo diferentes sonidos y estilos a través del poder de la música.

Como amante de la música que creció en el barrio de Clark-Fulton, en Cleveland, JP aporta una conexión personal con la comunidad que hace que esta clase sea aún más significativa.

¡Nos encanta ver cómo los miembros de nuestra comunidad aprenden nuevas habilidades, exploran su creatividad y crean tradiciones para compartir y transmitir a otros!

Our students brought the sabor to the stage with bachata, plena, and merengue! Visitors also explored their creativity through crafts inspired by Taíno symbols and nicho boxes, which tell stories through art and cultural imagery.

Latin percussion instructor Nelson Orta introduced kids and parents to the rhythms of Latin music through an interactive conga class. The experience was such a hit that two new students signed up for Latin percussion at the Center! Bri Feliciano brought everyone together for a salsa lesson, giving visitors the chance to move, learn, and experience Latin dance firsthand.

Families also enjoyed exploring the museum, making it a wonderful day of culture, learning, and connection.

Thank you to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for inviting Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center to share our programs, connect with visitors, and celebrate the traditions that bring our community together!

¡Nuestros estudiantes llevaron todo el sabor al escenario con presentaciones de bachata, plena y merengue! Los visitantes también exploraron su creatividad a través de manualidades inspiradas en símbolos taínos y cajas de nicho, que cuentan historias a través del arte y las imágenes culturales.

Nelson Orta, nuestro instructor de percusión latina, presentó a niños y padres los ritmos de la música latina a través de una clase interactiva de conga. ¡La experiencia fue todo un éxito y dos nuevos estudiantes se inscribieron en las clases de percusión latina del Centro! Bri Feliciano reunió a todos para una clase de salsa, brindándoles a los visitantes la oportunidad de bailar, aprender y experimentar la danza latina de primera mano.

Las familias también disfrutaron explorando el museo, haciendo de este un día maravilloso de cultura, aprendizaje y conexión.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we recognize the woman whose name and legacy are at the heart of our work: Julia de Burgos, the celebrated Puerto Rican poet, educator, journalist, and advocate whose words continue to resonate across generations.

To us, Julia de Burgos represents the power of art, culture, and self-expression. Through her life and poetry, she reminds us of the importance of embracing who we are, honoring our roots, and sharing the stories, memories, and traditions that shape our identities.

At Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center, we carry that legacy forward by creating spaces where our community can celebrate its heritage, preserve its culture, and connect across generations. Through our programs, we reach thousands of people each year, bringing our community together through the arts and our shared cultural experiences.

Sobre la artista:Berta Rojas fue nombrada Fellow of the Americas por el Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts en reconocimiento a su excelencia artística. Su país natal, Paraguay, también la ha honrado con el título de Embajadora Ilustre de las Artes Musicales. Berta se dedica a promover la música de Paraguay, su país natal, así como la música latinoamericana en general. En 2022, recibió el premio The Golden Guitar: A Life Dedicated to the Guitar, otorgado por el Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi de Milán. About the musician: Berta Rojas was named Fellow of the Americas of the Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, for her artistic excellence, and her home country of Paraguay has honored her with the title of Illustrious Ambassador of Musical Arts. Berta focuses on promoting the music of her country, Paraguay, as well as Latin American music in general. In 2022, Berta received the award “The Golden Guitar: A Life Dedicated to the Guitar,” granted by the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Milan. More recently, in 2023, she was distinguished with the National Order of Merit in the degree of Grand Cross, the highest recognition granted by the Republic of Paraguay.

Por generaciones, los puertorriqueños han hecho de Cleveland su hogar. Muchas familias llegaron aquí en los años 50 y 60, dejando la isla para construir algo nuevo.

Esta es una de las razones por las que quisimos traer esta iniciativa a Cleveland. Representa la belleza que puede surgir de las dificultades y los sacrificios, al igual que la resiliencia de las generaciones que abrieron el camino para que hoy estemos aquí.

There’s still time to experience this collection celebrating the creativity, culture, and stories of Latino artists across Northeast Ohio. In collaboration with Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA), and curated by Max McMillen and Terry Flores, this exhibition brings together artists from Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center to explore identity, heritage, and what it means to live between worlds.

Featuring work by Clara Aguilar, El Arvizu, John Carreon, Bruno Casiano, Hector Castellanos Lara, Terry Flores, Camilo Gonzalez, Miguel Rivera, Savannah Sofia, and Two Guardians Studios.
