Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center showed out for this year’s Parade the Circle!🧵🎉

Remember the seamstress of your barrio; the one who sews and stitches everyone’s clothes?

Becky Aviles led the creation of this project, designing its moving parts and bringing it to life. Students and family members from our Latina Image Leadership Program and our youth dance group Latin Social Dance, along with other participants were dressed as her supplies, from her fabric to the blue tin of “cookies” with needle and thread. They danced through Wade Oval, tied together with hand-crafted ribbons and strings.

💖We are so grateful to have participated in Parade the Circle over the course of 15 years! Thank you to Hector Castellanos, Becky, all the volunteers and participants, the CMA, and everyone who came!

¿Recuerdas a la costurera de tu barrio; esa persona que cose y remienda la ropa de todo el mundo?

Becky Avilés lideró la creación de este proyecto, diseñando sus partes móviles y dándole vida. Estudiantes y familiares de nuestro Programa de Liderazgo Latina Image y nuestro grupo juvenil de baile Latin Social Dance, junto a otros participantes, se vistieron como sus herramientas y materiales de costura: desde sus telas hasta la lata azul de “galletitas” con aguja e hilo. Bailaron por Wade Oval, unidos por cintas y hilos hechos a mano.

💖 ¡Estamos muy agradecidos de haber participado en el Parade the Circle durante 15 años! Gracias a Héctor Castellanos, Becky, todos los voluntarios y participantes, el CMA, y a todas las personas que nos acompañaron.

Explore the rhythms of Latin percussion with Nelson Orta in this new bilingual music class!

In this interactive class, students will learn the history of the conga drum, instrument care, tuning, and traditional bongo and Plena rhythms while exploring the rich musical traditions of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

🥁 Instruments provided in this free class for all ages.

Mondays: Starting July 6th and ending September 7th

After a year of exploring the themes of belonging, identity, and community through The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, we're coming together for an afternoon filled with art, music, culture, and fun!

FREE Flamenco Dance Summer Classes for Kids and Teens

Ready to stomp, clap, and move to something new? Our flamenco youth classes are back and invite kids and teens to explore rhythm, movement, and self expression through this vibrant dance form, guided by Alice Lawhorn of Abrepaso Flamenco. Students will have the opportunity to perform at ¡Celebrando! this summer.
