ABC READ, INC

ABC READ, INC ABC READ, INC is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Our mission is to help develop and nurture the love of reading in every child. ABC READ, INC.

was founded so that Black families and those who come from underserved communities
where reading proficiency is very low can be read aloud to and they will be able to take books with them so they can begin to build their own libraries at home. We also want our children to have access to everything that will help them gain the necessary literacy skills they will need, so they can thrive in a world

that is advancing every single day. ABC READ also understands that a major component to a child developing the love of reading is they must begin to pick healthful foods to eat in particular at snack time. Just like there are countless number of studies that show reading aloud to children is one of the most effective ways to improve a child's reading skills; studies also show that there is a strong link between children who eat healthful snacks and doing well academically. This is why after our fun and interactive read alouds we make sure to give children healthy snacks to choose from, especially those who come from areas where it is a food desert and there are a lack of quality grocery stores in their communities.

Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn (appease) are four common responses people can have when they are faced with traumatic events. Trauma goes far beyond simply being upset, frustrated, or angry. Trauma can deeply impact a person’s ability to cope, process emotions, and feel safe emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

In this powerful clip from my conversation with Dr. Yusuf Malik Frederick about his thought-provoking book I Love Islam but I’m Tired of Muslims: How Spiritual Abuse and Racial Trauma Intersect to Cause Psychological Distress Among African American Muslims, he breaks down what trauma really is and why understanding it matters.

These are conversations our communities desperately need because too many people are silently suffering while trying to navigate racism, religious harm, emotional pain, and spiritual confusion.

This clip is only a small portion of our deep and honest discussion. Head over to my YouTube channel to listen to the full conversation and join us as we unpack healing, faith, trauma, and truth.

In this story, little Bintou desperately wants beautiful braids with beads and decorations just like the older girls, but her family tells her she’s too young and only allowed to wear simple cornrows. Bintou begins to wonder if she will ever get the hairstyle she dreams of.

But will her family end up changing their minds about allowing her to get braids with decorations? 👀

Our second Youth Book Club for our 8-10 year olds is here and we are so excited! This time our young readers will dive into the second book in the JD and the Great Barber Battle series, JD and the Family Business! 📚✨

Book clubs are powerful because they help children:
⭐ Build stronger reading comprehension
⭐ Increase confidence when speaking and sharing ideas
⭐ Develop friendships through meaningful discussions
⭐ Expand vocabulary and critical thinking skills
⭐ Create a lifelong love for reading

Most importantly, book clubs help beat the summer slide by keeping our children engaged in fun, enriching literacy activities while school is out!

At ABC READ, we are committed to helping our communities become more literate and helping our children see reading as something enjoyable, empowering, and life changing. Literacy is freedom, and we are proud to create spaces where our youth can grow academically and socially through books.

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is watching our children grow over the years and seeing the results of consistency, support, and strong literacy foundations.

I recently received a message from the parent of one of my students who is now a rising 4th grader. I’ve been working with her since kindergarten when she didn’t yet know all of her letters and sounds. Her mother was so excited to tell me that her daughter became the TOP performer on her 3rd grade class OST Reading Test! 🎉

Her mother, Sakinah, wanted to give me my flowers for being a guide throughout the years and helping her daughter build the strong foundational reading skills she needed to succeed. But I also have to give flowers right back to HER because parents play a major role in a child’s reading success.

Sakinah has ALWAYS made sure her daughter showed up present, prepared, and ready for every tutoring session. She understood that tutoring alone is not enough. She did the shadow work behind the scenes necessary for her daughter to become a strong reader. From reinforcing skills at home, making literacy a priority, staying consistent, communicating, and ensuring her daughter attended our ABC READ Reading Camps, she stayed committed to the process every step of the way. 👏🏾📚

This is what happens when parents and educators work together with the child at the center. Reading success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, intentionality, consistency, and support from people who truly care.

This student also regularly attended our ABC READ Reading Camps filled with engaging, enriching, and culturally responsive literacy activities that help cultivate a culture of literacy within the home and throughout our community.

I’m passionate about helping children master the 5 components of reading while also helping them ENJOY reading and build confidence in themselves as learners.

📚 Summer is the BEST time to get your child the reading support they need before the next school year begins. Don’t wait until your child is struggling academically to seek help. Let’s build those skills and confidence now!

“People don’t realize how a man’s whole life can be changed by one book.” — Malcolm X ✊🏾📚

Join us tonight at 7:30PM EST for our special “Teach Me About Malcolm” live read aloud as we honor the life, legacy, and powerful impact of Malcolm X ahead of his birthday on May 19.

This read aloud is more than just story time — it’s about showing our children how reading transformed Malcolm’s life and helped shape him into one of the most influential voices for Black empowerment, education, and justice. We want our children to know that his legacy is not forgotten. 🖤❤️💚

And we’re making learning FUN! 🎉 Immediately following the read aloud, we’ll have an exciting Kahoot game where families can test their knowledge and engage together live.

“Get that book away from me!”
“Why I gotta read? It’s summertime!” ☀️📚😂

Sound familiar?

The moment summer starts, many of our kids act like reading is a punishment instead of a pathway. But here’s the truth: studies show children pay more attention to what we DO than what we SAY.

So if we’re constantly scrolling, binge watching shows, and never picking up a book ourselves… why would they believe reading matters? 👀

One of the easiest ways to beat the summer slide is simple: let our children SEE us reading too.

Let them catch us enjoying a good book.
Let them see us laughing, learning, highlighting, discussing, and growing through reading.

Because when reading becomes part of the culture of the home, children begin to see literacy differently. 📖✨

This summer, let’s normalize:
Family reading time.
Library runs.
Book talks at the dinner table.
Reading at the park.
Black families bonding through books.

Reading is contagious.

So tell me… what books are YOU committed to reading this summer? 👇🏾

✨ Calling all book lovers, aspiring writers, educators, parents, and community supporters! ✨

Join us this Thursday at Columbus Intermediate School in Bedford for a powerful and inspiring Women’s Author Event where incredible women authors will come together to share the stories behind their journeys into becoming published authors. 📚✍🏾

This event is more than just books — it’s about courage, purpose, healing, creativity, and the power of using your voice. Each author will share what inspired them to write, the challenges they overcame, and why it’s so important to tell YOUR story because someone else may find strength, hope, or inspiration through it.

Come be encouraged, empowered, and motivated as we celebrate literacy, storytelling, and women making an impact through their words. Whether you dream of writing your own book someday or simply love hearing authentic stories, this is an event you don’t want to miss!

📖 Books will also be available for purchase afterward, giving you the opportunity to support local Black women authors and take home inspiring reads for yourself, your children, or loved ones.

We’re looking forward to connecting with you all! 💕
