ABC READ, INC ABC READ, INC is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Our mission is to help develop and nurture the love of reading in every child. ABC READ, INC.

was founded so that Black families and those who come from underserved communities
where reading proficiency is very low can be read aloud to and they will be able to take books with them so they can begin to build their own libraries at home. We also want our children to have access to everything that will help them gain the necessary literacy skills they will need, so they can thrive in a world that is advancing every single day. ABC READ also understands that a major component to a child developing the love of reading is they must begin to pick healthful foods to eat in particular at snack time. Just like there are countless number of studies that show reading aloud to children is one of the most effective ways to improve a child's reading skills; studies also show that there is a strong link between children who eat healthful snacks and doing well academically. This is why after our fun and interactive read alouds we make sure to give children healthy snacks to choose from, especially those who come from areas where it is a food desert and there are a lack of quality grocery stores in their communities.

🔬 SOMETIMES WHAT LOOKS LIKE MISCHIEF IS ACTUALLY BRILLIANCE IN DISGUISE! 👩🏾‍🔬🧪

Some children ask a MILLION questions, get into EVERYTHING, and make messes everywhere! 😂 But sometimes, what we’re witnessing is the mind of a future SCIENTIST!

That was the powerful message behind our interactive read-aloud of Ada Twist, Scientist with the preschoolers and Pre-K students at Horizon Child Care Center!

Ada didn’t begin speaking until she was three years old, but once she found her voice, the questions NEVER stopped! Her parents were often frustrated by her constant investigating and experimenting until they realized their daughter had the mind of a scientist!

What a powerful reminder that every child thinks, learns, and explores differently. Our responsibility is to recognize and nurture their brilliance, even when we don’t quite understand it! ❤️

After the story, our little scientists colored, cut out, and created their own SCIENCE COLLAGES featuring microscopes, magnifying glasses, flasks, goggles, and lab coats! They LOVED IT! 🔬🎨

One of Horizon’s wonderful educators reinforced the learning by asking questions about the story and their collages.

📚🫧 WHEN MS. SASHA SHOWS UP, LITERACY COMES ALIVE! 🎉❤️

The babies at Horizon Child Care Center in Tremont got their very FIRST ABC READ and Reading Is Freedom literacy experience, and let me tell y’all… THEY LOVED IT! 🥰

We brought one of my favorite read-alouds, My Brother Charlie, and turned storytime into a fun-filled literacy adventure!

🔤 First, we warmed up those brilliant little brains with a phonemic awareness game! I made the sounds, and they identified the letters!

🫧 Next, we played “Catch a Bubble!” I blew bubbles, and the babies had a blast chasing and popping them!

📖 Then came storytime! The children listened, interacted, and engaged with the beautiful story My Brother Charlie.

🧩 But we weren’t finished! Each child colored a puzzle piece, and the phenomenal assistant, Ms. Z, cut them out so they could be connected to create a beautiful classroom border!

📚 And of course, NO ONE LEFT EMPTY-HANDED! Every child received a book to take home to help build their very own home library!

THIS is what cultivating a culture of literacy looks like! It’s more than reading words on a page. It’s building connections, strengthening early literacy skills, encouraging creativity, and helping children associate books with JOY!

Wooooh! These babies got the FULL Ms. Sasha literacy experience! 😂❤️📚

Entrepreneurs are PROBLEM SOLVERS! 💡📚 And sometimes the problems we solve create learning opportunities that last a lifetime!

Ms. Qadirah, Director of Horizon Child Care Center, came to me with a challenge. Some of the children were tearing books and not handling them properly. She asked if I could teach them how to care for books.

My response? ABSOLUTELY! Let’s turn this problem into a teachable moment! 🙌🏾

I created a short, interactive lesson built around three simple rules:

📚 Gentle Hands – Handle books with love and care. No tearing, bending, or writing on pages.

📚 Keep Books Clean – No food or drinks around our books!

📚 Books Go Home – Every book has a special place where it belongs when we’re finished reading.

The children watched demonstrations and acted out the RIGHT and WRONG ways to handle books. They were engaged, learning, and having fun!

What made this lesson especially meaningful? For many of these children, this was their very first time receiving explicit instruction on how to care for books.

We sometimes expect children to know things they’ve never been taught!

This wasn’t just a lesson about protecting books. It was about teaching responsibility, respect, independence, and the value of literacy.

When children learn to value books, they’re taking an important step toward valuing reading. And reading creates opportunities, knowledge, and FREEDOM! ✊🏾📖

This is what happens when community partnerships go beyond simply providing services. We identify problems, create solutions, and help our children grow!

When Children Tell Their Stories, They Discover the Power of Their Voices! 📚❤️✊🏾

Our children have stories to tell, experiences to share, and ideas worth hearing! And YES, even our preschoolers and Pre-K babies!

Here are 5 powerful literacy benefits children gain when we encourage them to tell their stories:

1. They Find Their Voice! 🎤 Children learn that their thoughts, feelings, and experiences matter. Their voices deserve to be heard!

2. They Develop Agency! 💪🏾 Storytelling empowers children to make choices, express their opinions, and become active participants in their own learning.

3. They Build Public Speaking Skills! 🗣️ Speaking in front of their peers helps children develop confidence, practice communicating clearly, and become comfortable expressing themselves.

4. They Learn to Organize Their Thoughts! 🧠 When children retell stories, describe events, or share personal experiences, they practice sequencing, recalling details, and explaining what happened first, next, and last.

5. They Strengthen Their Literacy and Comprehension Skills! 📖 Storytelling builds vocabulary, oral language, listening skills, memory, and the ability to make meaningful connections between books and their own lives.

These are just some of the beautiful literacy skills we’re cultivating through our weekly ABC READ, INC., Reading Is Freedom, and Horizon Child Care Center partnership!

Every week, we bring culturally relevant stories to life through interactive read-alouds, meaningful conversations, and engaging literacy activities that encourage our brilliant young learners to THINK, SPEAK, CREATE, and SHARE!

We’re not just reading books to children. We’re helping them recognize that THEIR stories matter, THEIR voices have power, and THEY have something valuable to contribute to the world!

That’s what cultivating a culture of literacy looks like!

📚 Parents, you don’t have to read every single word in the book!

Today I read Carter Reads the Newspaper to our 3- and 4-year-old groups. I purposely didn’t read every word on every page.

Why? Because the book has a lot of text, and I knew that expecting our little ones to sit through every word could cause them to lose interest.

Instead, we looked at the illustrations. I asked:

👀 “What do you see?”

🤔 “What do you think is happening in this picture?”

🗣️ And I had them repeat simple words and phrases from the story.

They were still engaging with the book, building vocabulary, making predictions and understanding the gist of the story—without me having to read every word.

Parents & caregivers, try these 3 things when a book feels a little too advanced:

1️⃣ Picture Walk First
Go through the pictures together. Ask your child what they see, what the characters might be doing and what they think will happen next.

2️⃣ Tell the Story in Your Own Words
It’s okay to shorten the text! Use simple language your child understands while still introducing a few new words from the book.

3️⃣ Pick a Phrase & Repeat It
Choose a fun or important phrase from the story and let your child say it with you each time it comes up. Repetition helps build language, memory and participation.

Remember: The goal isn’t always to finish every word on the page. The goal is to help children understand, engage, talk, think and enjoy books.

Sometimes we have to meet our babies where they are and bring the story to life in a way that works for them. ❤️📚

📚 If you’re a young person who struggles with writing…this book is for YOU.

If you have amazing ideas in your head but struggle to get them onto paper—this book is for you.

If you think you don’t have a story worth telling—this book is for you.

If writing gets frustrating and sometimes you feel like giving up—this book is for you.

And if you’re a young Black Muslim boy who wants to open a book and see a main character who looks like you, believes like you, and has a story like yours—this book is DEFINITELY for you. 🖤☪️

Abdul’s Story is about a young boy who LOVES telling stories but struggles with writing. Then a special guest, Mr. Muhammad, visits his classroom, shares his own writing, and helps Abdul realize something powerful: struggling with writing doesn’t mean you’re not a writer—and it definitely doesn’t mean your story isn’t worth telling.

Sometimes our children just need someone to see the storyteller inside of them and say, “Keep going. Your story matters.”

When I tell you my heart was full and my purpose was even more solidified Allahuakbar(God is the Greatest!)

Listening to the conversation between Paul Hill and Paul Coates took me back to the time when my Granny Gloria Sallee Rice (rip) would have us in the company of conscious Black people.

She grounded me in the aspect of caring for my people. This is why listening to Brotha Paul Coates talk about being intentional about getting books printed about our people, by our people, in the hands of our people, resonated with me very deeply.

His creation of the second largest Black owned independent publishing company in the country, is an amazing feat and of course he made sure to tell us he didn’t do it alone.

He understood that his vision wouldn’t have came to fruition without the help of the people in the community right there supporting with prayers and paper.

This conversation was more than just going back down memory lane. It was about reminding us to find our purpose and using it consistently towards the true liberation of our people.

Thank you to the phenomenal Paul and Marquita Hill and their awesome son Fanon and his amazing wife, for bringing another gem and elder to the East Cleveland Public Library.

Shout out to the East Cleveland Public library executive director Carlos Latimer, his assistant Elmer Turner , the board and staff and everyone involved in making this such an incredible literary event!
